Excavation Site 1
First Sovereign Colonies Dig on Tau Volantis
Excavation Site 1 was the first dig site the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces established on the frozen surface of Tau Volantis, where the earliest remains of the planet's ancient inhabitants were unearthed and the preserved Nexus corpses were studied to locate the buried alien city.
Excavation Site 1 was the first dig the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces opened on the surface of Tau Volantis, the frozen world the Sovereign Colonies came to investigate after tracing the Nexus signal. It produced much of their early discoveries, and its frozen Nexus specimens, locked in the ice mid-clash, became a landmark of the campaign. The site sat adjacent to Facility One, joined to it by tunnels, a pipeline, and a sprawl of research and archeological infrastructure.
Establishment and layout#
Excavation Site 1 was raised among some of the first excavated remnants of the Tau Volantis inhabitants. Its earliest research complex was improvised, relying on insulated tents to shelter the archeological teams from the cold and to protect the recovered remains. This makeshift ward stayed in use until a dedicated complex, Facility Two, was finished on the plateau above the primary city of the aliens. Alongside the research wards, the site held the first experimental drill site, sunk to open access to the vast subglacial caverns beneath the ice, and an archeology warehouse for the recovered material.
Nexus research#
The site's most significant feature was Specimen Station 3, designated NX-03, the third in a series of sections built to hold the Nexus corpses that the flash freezing of Tau Volantis had preserved. The warehouse was fitted with furnaces so the enormous body could be thawed under control and its neural network studied. The discoveries made here and at the two other specimen sites allowed the SCAF to triangulate the Nexus signal and pinpoint the buried alien city, paving the way for the construction of Facility Two.
Delta Barracks#
On a plateau overlooking Facility One stood the Delta Barracks, the staging area for the initial excavation. Reached across treacherous ice cliff faces, it housed the troop contingent erecting SCAF facilities across the planet. The compound was placed beside a second Nexus creature, NX-02, and atop the D-9 Armory, built from prefabricated sections driven into the ice and rock. By the end the armory had been emptied, its firearms handed out among the troops together with single rounds for the execution of Scenario Five. In place of weapons its halls filled with the dead, SCAF troops sealed in body bags or laid out for transport, some bags simply cast aside once the orders came down.
Frequently asked questions
- What was Excavation Site 1?
- Excavation Site 1 was the first excavation site the Sovereign Colonies established on the surface of Tau Volantis. It produced much of the SCAF's initial findings and contained the early research wards, drill sites, and warehouses used to study the planet's ancient remains.
- How did Excavation Site 1 lead to the discovery of the alien city?
- The site held one of three preserved Nexus corpses, kept frozen by the flash freezing of Tau Volantis. Researchers thawed and studied its neural network at Specimen Station 3, and findings from this and the two other sites let the SCAF triangulate the Nexus signal and locate the ancient city, which made the construction of Facility Two possible.

Facility Two
Facility Two, also called the Research Compound, was the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces science base built atop a mountain on Tau Volantis to reach the Alien Machine buried beneath it. It was abandoned during the Scenario Five purge in 2314 and lay frozen and forgotten until 2514.
Tau Volantis
Tau Volantis was a frozen planet in the HR 8799 system where, two million years ago, an alien civilization flash-froze their own world to halt a Convergence Event. Mistaken for the Marker homeworld, it became the site of the final clash over the Brethren Moons.
Aliens: The Lost Civilization of Tau Volantis
The Aliens were a semi-aquatic, technologically advanced species native to the ocean world of Tau Volantis. More than two million years ago they discovered a Black Marker, fell to a Necromorph outbreak, and in a final act built a planet-freezing Machine to halt the Brethren Moon they had spawned.
Nexus Organism
Nexus organisms, also called Hive Minds, were massive Necromorphs that received the control signal of the Markers and Brethren Moons and relayed it to the smaller Necromorph forms. They served as the second in command of an outbreak, coordinating the horde across whole worlds and ships.
Nexus
The Nexus, also called a Nexus Organism or Hive Mind, was the commander-tier Necromorph that received and broadcast the Marker signal to lesser forms. The best-known specimen was raised from the natives of Tau Volantis and frozen beneath the planet alongside the Alien Machine.
