Private Tim Caufman was a soldier of the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces present during the Necromorph outbreak on Tau Volantis in 2314. An ammunition specialist who recovered the Codex from the wreck of the Mule, he was caught up in the Scenario Five kill order that ended the SCAF presence on the planet and was executed by General Spencer Mahad.

Service on Tau Volantis#

Tim Caufman was deployed to the Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces colony on Tau Volantis in support of the archaeological research being carried out there. During his posting he was assigned to the armory, where he worked as an ammunition specialist, and he served under the callsign W-250.

On June 17, 2314, the Sovereign Colonies Council issued a Scenario Five kill order covering all personnel on Tau Volantis, a measure meant to contain what had been unearthed on the planet. Caufman was unaware that the order had been given. The next day, when General Spencer Mahad came to the armory to requisition all of its ammunition for the killings, Caufman reported that the armory key was missing, prompting Mahad to threaten him with permanent kitchen duty unless it was found quickly.

The Codex and the Mule#

As one of the last surviving SCAF soldiers on Tau Volantis, Caufman was sent together with Private Sam Ackerman by Doctor Earl Serrano to retrieve a Codex that Serrano believed capable of saving everything. The search led the two men to the wreck of a crashed ship, the Mule. They fought their way through the creatures overrunning it to reach the bridge, where they found the Codex Serrano sought.

The Mule then began to explode, shaking loose from its precarious position on the edge of a cliff. To save themselves, Caufman attached the Codex to his suit, and he and Ackerman rappelled down the cliff face. Their tethers broke, sending both men tumbling down the rock. Caufman narrowly escaped the burning debris, but Ackerman was killed by the falling wreckage.

Death at Facility Two#

At the bottom of the cliff, Caufman found himself in an encampment at Facility Two, surrounded by the bodies of his fellow soldiers, and was confronted by General Spencer Mahad himself. Caufman tried to explain the nature of the Codex as Serrano had described it, but Mahad was unconvinced, believing they had lost all control of the expedition. The General took the Codex from him and asked whether he loved Earth and his parents back home. When Caufman answered that he did, Mahad calmly approved, then shot him point blank in the head. Mahad afterward deleted the data stored on the Codex and took his own life to comply with the Scenario Five order.
