Is Leon Kennedy Married?

No. Leon Kennedy has never been married in any Resident Evil game or film, and he has no partner on screen. The closest thing he has to a love story is Ada Wong, and Capcom has kept that deliberately unresolved for almost thirty years. Here's what the games show.

By Joe Garratt

No, Leon S. Kennedy isn't married. Nothing in the Resident Evil games, CG films or series gives him a wife, and as of Resident Evil Requiem he's still a single government agent. His only long-running romantic thread is with the spy Ada Wong, and it has never turned into a relationship on screen. (Resident Evil 2 (1998); Resident Evil Requiem)

No wife, no family#

Leon's life after Raccoon City has been one assignment after another. The government recruited him in 1998, and by 2013 he was an agent of the Division of Security Operations, which he still serves in Requiem. Across Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 6, the CG films and Requiem, no wife, fiancée or children ever turn up, and nobody refers to one. (Resident Evil 6; Resident Evil Requiem)

The films show the cost. In Vendetta, set in 2014, Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers find him in Colorado, drinking and worn down by guilt after an outbreak in which he had to kill his own infected backup team. (Resident Evil: Vendetta)

The girlfriend he left behind#

There is one ex in the record, and it isn't from a game. A Japanese strategy guide for Resident Evil 2, published in 1998, says Leon broke up with his girlfriend on the way to Raccoon City, then got drunk at a motel and overslept, which is why he arrived so late. The 2019 remake replaces that with a phone call telling him to stay away, and the girlfriend is never mentioned in any game. More on that on why Leon went to Raccoon City. (Biohazard 2 Official Guide Book; Resident Evil 2 (2019))

Capcom's own profile of him, a file in The Umbrella Chronicles, adds a teasing line: his youth sometimes leads him astray where women are concerned. (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles)

Leon and Ada#

Ada is the reason people ask. They met in the police station basement in 1998, where she claimed to be looking for her boyfriend. She was really a spy after the G-Virus. (Resident Evil 2 (1998))

The 2019 remake makes the bond plainer. When Leon confronts her about the sample, he tells her that as much as he wanted to trust her, he didn't. "I don't wanna hurt you," she says, holding a gun on him. He answers: "Then you shoot me, but I don't think you can." Moments later she's shot and falls, and her last words to him are "Take care of yourself, Leon." (Resident Evil 2 (2019))

She wasn't dead. In Spain in 2004 she saved him several times, even though her employer Albert Wesker had at one point told her to kill him. At the end she took the Plaga sample from him at gunpoint, then left him the keys to a jet ski so he and Ashley could escape the island. (Resident Evil 4 (2005))

The pattern holds. They crossed paths again in the Eastern Slav Republic in 2011. In 2013, when Chris blamed her for the deaths of his men, Leon stepped in on her side. She went on to help Leon and Helena Harper bring down Derek Simmons, left him the evidence that cleared his name, and disappeared again. (Resident Evil: Damnation; Resident Evil 6)

So are they in love?#

The games won't say, and that's deliberate. Interpretation: most players read the two as people with real feelings for each other who are kept apart by the work, Ada's especially, since she answers to whoever is paying. Leon trusts her when he shouldn't and defends her to others; she bends her orders to keep him alive. Neither ever says it out loud, and every game ends with them going separate ways. (Resident Evil 2 (2019); Resident Evil 4 (2005); Resident Evil 6)

So the safe answer is this: Leon isn't married, he isn't with Ada, and the one woman he can't stop running into is the one he can never pin down. (Resident Evil 6; Resident Evil Requiem)

Ada Wong covers her side, and why Ada worked for Wesker explains the job that put her on Leon's path in Spain. Leon's full story is on Leon S. Kennedy. (Resident Evil 4 (2005); Resident Evil 6)

Frequently asked questions

Does Leon Kennedy have a wife?
No. No game, CG film or series gives him a wife or a long-term partner, up to and including Resident Evil Requiem in 2026.
Are Leon and Ada Wong together?
Not as a couple. They have worked together, worked against each other and saved each other since 1998, and they clearly care about each other, but Ada always leaves and the games never put them together.
Did Leon have a girlfriend?
Not on screen. A 1998 Japanese guidebook says he broke up with a girlfriend on the way to Raccoon City, but that never appears in the games.
Is Leon in love with Ada?
The games never have him say so. In the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 he tells her he wanted to trust her, and he keeps taking her side against others in later games, which most players read as feelings he never acts on.
