Dagobah

the swamp world of Yoda

Dagobah was a remote, swamp-covered world in the Outer Rim Territories, strong in the Force and home to a cave saturated with the dark side. It served as the hiding place of the Jedi Master Yoda and the site of Luke Skywalker's training.

By Joe Garratt

Dagobah was a remote, swamp-covered planet in the Outer Rim Territories, recognized even during the High Republic Era as a world unusually strong in the Force. Cloaked in mist and threaded with dark waters, it harbored a cave heavy with the influence of the dark side. Dagobah is best remembered as the refuge of the Jedi Master Yoda during the years of Imperial rule and as the place where Luke Skywalker sought him out for training in the ways of the Jedi.

A world strong in the Force#

Long before the Galactic Civil War, an academic paper written during the High Republic Era described Dagobah as a world strong in the Force. Its swamps were broken by highlands, and a pronounced wet season periodically forced its lone Jedi resident to relocate to higher ground for its duration. At the heart of the planet's reputation lay a cave steeped in the dark side, known as the Cave of Evil, whose influence radiated across the surrounding swamp.

Refuge and training of Yoda#

Yoda chose Dagobah as his place of exile, positioning his home near the dark side cave but deliberately beyond the reach of its influence, and he would visit the cave only every few years. While there he encountered the former Sava Madelin Sun, who had come to the planet searching for him. After saving her from a monster, Yoda used the Force to lead her into the cave, where the visions she experienced dissuaded her from continuing her search, and she left the planet while he watched from afar.

It was on Dagobah that Luke Skywalker came to train, crashing his X-wing starfighter into the swamp and seeking out the hidden Master. Yoda eventually died on the planet and became one with the Force. With his passing, the Cave of Evil seized the opportunity to spread its power across Dagobah once more.

Later visitors#

Sometime after the skirmish on the Minemoon, Kylo Ren, nephew of Luke Skywalker, traveled to Dagobah alongside his master, Supreme Leader Snoke of the First Order, in order to confront his darkest fears. Within the Cave of Evil he experienced a vision of his uncle Luke, whom he dueled and killed, and a vision of his parents Leia and Han Solo. Unable to bring himself to kill the vision of his parents, he instead destroyed the cave, deceiving his master.

By 34 ABY, herbs gathered from Dagobah had reached Oga's Cantina on Batuu, where they became a sought-after ingredient in an alcoholic drink known as the Dagobah Slug Slinger. The freighter Millennium Falcon also set down on the world at one point, where the Wookiee Chewbacca sought a measure of rest aboard the ship while the droids BB-8 and R2-D2, the latter the very astromech that had accompanied Luke to Dagobah, kept their own company.
