Zion: the Last Human City
Zion is the free human city of The Matrix, deep underground near the Earth's core. It's home to everyone freed from the pods, and the Architect reveals that it has been destroyed before.
Zion is the name people whisper in the first film and the place we finally see in the second. It's the last human city, the place freed minds go, and the thing every crew in the Matrix is fighting to protect. It's also not what its people think it is. (The Matrix Reloaded)
The city#
We hear about Zion from Tank in the first film, and it isn't seen until Reloaded. It's a huge cavern city, with ships docking at one end and a council that has to balance Morpheus's faith against Lock's practical view of defence. The rave in the temple is the film's way of showing what the people have that the Machines don't. (The Matrix Reloaded)
Faith is a real political force there. Some of the city believes in Morpheus's prophecy of the One and others think it's nonsense. Both camps are looking at the same war and drawing opposite conclusions. (The Matrix Reloaded)
The Architect's reveal#
The Architect's speech changes what Zion means. The Matrix keeps producing people who reject it, and if they stay inside they destabilise the system, so a place to go is part of the design. This is Zion's sixth version. Each time, the Machines destroy it and the One picks a small group to restart it. (The Matrix Reloaded)
Zion is real, in other words, but it isn't as free as it believes. It's a pressure valve, and the people there don't know it.
The siege#
The attack in Revolutions is the series' biggest battle. Sentinels break into the dock and swarm the defenders, who hold on with armoured units and with the hovercraft's electromagnetic pulse, a weapon that knocks out machines but also their own equipment. Niobe's flight back through the tunnels and a young recruit called the Kid are among the film's better moments. Then, with Zion about to fall, the Sentinels stop and leave. Neo has made his deal. (The Matrix Revolutions)
After the peace#
Resurrections reveals that the city didn't last. It's gone by the time Neo returns, and a new human city, Io, has taken its place. Humans there live alongside Machine allies, and it's the first time in the series that the two peoples actually share anything. (The Matrix Resurrections)
Frequently asked questions
