Battlestar Chronos

the first loss of the second war

The Chronos was a Chronos-type battlestar of the Colonial Fleet and the first battlestar destroyed by enemy fire in almost forty years. Dispatched to recover a lost reconnaissance pilot days before the Fall, she was lured into a Cylon trap and torn apart by nuclear fire.

By Joe Garratt

The Chronos was a Chronos-type battlestar in service with the Colonial Fleet during the interwar period. She holds the grim distinction of being the first battlestar destroyed by enemy fire in almost forty years, lost only several days before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies in a Cylon ambush that also drew in the Pegasus.

Class#

The Chronos was the only known representative of the Chronos-type, a class of battlestar utilized by the Colonial Fleet during the interwar period shortly before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. One further Chronos-type vessel was recorded docked at the Colonial Fleet Hub, but the line was otherwise unattested in service.

The rescue mission and the trap#

Several days before the Fall, the Colonial Fleet picked up a faint signal from Lieutenant Daniel Novacek, a pilot who had been lost a year earlier on a stealth reconnaissance mission across the Cylon border. The Chronos was dispatched to check on the signal and to rescue Novacek if possible.

During the mission the Chronos came under attack from Cylon forces, who were presumably testing their Command Navigation Program override, the exploit only then coming online across most Colonial vessels. After the Chronos missed her scheduled check-in with Colonial Fleet Command, the Pegasus was dispatched to render assistance. The Pegasus fell into the same trap, attacked immediately after she jumped into the theater. In the battle that followed, the Chronos was struck by several nuclear warheads, the impacts tearing the ship apart.
