Berzerk-class

the modular support vessel

The Berzerk-class was a large Colonial support vessel that served from the Cylon War through to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Its success was attributed to detachable multi-mission package modules carried in the mid-section of its hull.

By Joe Garratt

The Berzerk-class was a type of support vessel used by the Colonials during the Cylon War and on through to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. One of the largest non-battlestar ships in the Colonial Fleet, it served for many years, its longevity attributed to detachable multi-mission package modules stored in the mid-section of its hull.

Design and modularity#

The Berzerk-class was one of the largest vessels in the Colonial Fleet that was not a battlestar, and it served for many years. Its defining feature was a set of detachable multi-mission package modules carried in the mid-section of the hull, which could be swapped to reconfigure the ship for different roles. This adaptability was credited as the chief reason for the class's long and successful service.

Armament#

The primary armament consisted of ten main dual kinetic energy weapon (KEW) batteries placed in the mid-section of the hull within interchangeable pods. Unlike the main batteries of the Jupiter-class or Mercury-class, these weapons appear similar in caliber to those of the Valkyrie-class, though in significantly lower numbers. It is unknown whether they could fire ship-to-ship missiles as their Valkyrie-based counterparts did.

Defenses#

Like many other Colonial vessels, the Berzerk-class relied on a dual-layered defense of active close-in weapon systems (CIWS) and passive armor. Only ten CIWS batteries were spread around the multi-mission package, giving the class a limited defensive arc and forcing it to rely heavily on its fighter complement for effective anti-fighter defense.

Fighter complement#

The exact fighter complement is unknown, but with ten launch tubes the class would have carried at least ten fighters with additional hulls in reserve. Its hangar bay measured 64 meters wide and 15.3 meters high, large enough to comfortably accommodate Colonial Raptors and shuttles, though unlikely to fit an SCT-type transport.

Crew and propulsion#

Little is recorded of the crew size, which can be summarized as in the upper hundreds rather than the thousands carried by Jupiter and Mercury battlestars. As a relic of the Cylon War, the ship's crew requirements would have been reduced significantly during the interwar period as fleet-wide automation was introduced. The Berzerk-class was propelled by five sublight engines at the rear of the ship, supplemented by smaller maneuvering thrusters scattered along the hull for quick and agile movement in combat. At least one FTL drive was installed aboard to enable faster-than-light travel.

Known ships#

Recorded ships of the class include the Fleet Escort Berzerk and two unnamed Berzerk-class fleet escorts, all destroyed over Scorpia during the attack on the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards, along with three further unnamed Berzerk-class escorts that took part in the Ghost Fleet Offensive. At the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards the class served alongside Valkyrie-class warships in defense of the yards.
