Darius: the dead brother Amanda Graystone kept seeing

Darius was the brother of Amanda Graystone. He died in a car crash on Caprica that his sister lived through, and the wreck did more damage to her afterwards than it had done at the time.

Who was Darius in Caprica?#

He was Amanda Graystone's brother, and by the time the audience meets him he has been dead for years and exists only as something his sister sees.

The crash is the whole of his recorded life. Amanda walked away from it, which is the part that broke her, and the nervous breakdown that followed came with Darius in it constantly. Two and a half years in the Delphi Convalescent Institute is what it took to get her back out.

Were the visions of Darius a sign?#

Amanda and Clarice Willow both entertained the idea, and the reason they did was a run of coincidences rather than the visions themselves.

Three things happened close together. Amanda saw her brother standing at the scene of a car crash in the streets of Caprica City. That sighting led her to a painting of the very place where he had died. And the convalescent institute where she had spent two and a half years chose that moment to send her a letter asking for a donation.

None of it proves anything, and the woman being shown it had a documented history of seeing exactly this. That is what makes the sequence work: Clarice Willow, whose interest in signs was never disinterested, was standing right there to help her read them.

A version that was cut#

A story thread dropped from "The Imperfections of Memory" would have made the visions a deliberate attack. In it, Tomas Vergis used a driver who closely resembled Darius to push Amanda towards insanity, as revenge on Daniel Graystone for the deaths connected to the meta-cognitive processor.
