Daru Mozu

refinery ship of the refugee fleet

Daru Mozu was a civilian tylium refinery ship that escaped the Fall of the Twelve Colonies with the Galactica-led refugee fleet. Critical to the fleet's fuel supply, it survived a terrorist bombing before its refining facilities were lost, leaving Hitei Kan as the fleet's last refinery.

By Joe Garratt

Daru Mozu, also designated Refinery 322, was a civilian refinery ship that escaped the Fall of the Twelve Colonies as part of the refugee fleet led by the Galactica and Colonial One. As a tylium-processing vessel, it was crucial to the fleet's supply of fuel. The lead ship of its own class, it was eventually lost, leaving the Hitei Kan as the fleet's sole source of tylium.

Role in the fleet#

Daru Mozu was a tylium-processing vessel, and the refined tylium it produced was vital to keeping the refugee fleet's ships fueled and capable of jumping. It was the lead ship of the Daru Mozu-type class of refineries, a design also represented by the Hitei Kan. The ship carried a crew and passenger complement of roughly 472 and was equipped for faster-than-light travel along with two sublight engines, maneuvering thrusters, and two docking ports.

The Demand Peace bombing#

Several months after the Fall, the terrorist group Demand Peace targeted the Daru Mozu in a suicide bombing. The attack killed four people aboard the ship, but the structural damage to the vessel itself was otherwise negligible, and it continued to serve the fleet's fuel needs.

Loss of the refinery#

Sometime after the bombing, the Daru Mozu's refining facilities were destroyed. With its capacity to process tylium gone, the burden of supplying the entire fleet with fuel fell to the Hitei Kan, which became the sole functioning refinery among the surviving ships. The Daru Mozu was ultimately scuttled.
