Colonial One
the presidential ship
Colonial One was a civilian passenger liner that became the official residence and workplace of the President of the United Colonies of Kobol after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Formerly Colonial Heavy 798, it served as the seat of the surviving government throughout the search for Earth.
Colonial One, formerly known as Colonial Heavy 798, was an Intersun Luxury Liners passenger liner of the Colonial Heavy 798-type. Following the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, it became the official residence and workplace of the President of the United Colonies of Kobol, serving as the seat of the surviving civilian government alongside Galactica's military command throughout the fleet's search for Earth.
The Fall and the birth of a presidency#
In the hours before the Fall, Colonial Heavy 798 departed Caprica City's Metrix Terminal bound for Galactica, carrying Secretary of Education Laura Roslin, the priestess Elosha, and representatives of the media. The bombing of Caprica coincided with the ship's return journey, and it, along with every other civilian vessel, was ordered to hold position in its space lane while combat raged.
As Colonial defeat became a serious possibility, Roslin took control of the ship and put it to emergency work as a mobile aid station. When Case Orange was enacted and the line of succession had collapsed, she was sworn in as President. The ship, rechristened Colonial One, became the administrative basis of a refugee fleet assembled with the help of Lieutenant Sharon "Boomer" Valerii. When the Cylons discovered the fleet, half its ships were left behind as every FTL-capable vessel obeyed Roslin's order to evacuate to Ragnar. After rendezvousing with Galactica, the fleet departed the system altogether in search of Earth.
The seat of government in exile#
Though Galactica coordinated military strategy, Colonial One was as much a Cylon target as any ship; five days after the attacks it was nearly destroyed by a missile. In the second month of the exodus a Galactica Marine unit boarded it when William Adama judged Roslin's orders to Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace a threat to fleet security.
After the discovery and colonization of New Caprica, Colonial One landed on the surface and became the residence and office of President Gaius Baltar. During the following year's Cylon occupation it was commandeered as a joint Baltar-Cylon chamber. In the liberation and evacuation that followed, an armed force protecting Roslin recaptured the ship, which departed the colony with Baltar left behind.
Final service and fate#
With the loss of Cloud 9 just before colonization, Colonial One took on the additional role of hosting meetings of the Quorum of Twelve. Those meetings ended during the mutiny on Galactica, when Vice President Tom Zarek had a mutinous Marine unit massacre the delegates after they refused to legitimize the uprising. Colonial One was ultimately destroyed after the fleet reached the planet rechristened Earth; on Admiral Adama's orders, Galactica and the rest of the fleet were directed into its sun.
