Val Chambers
Caprica's Minister of Defense
Val Chambers was the Minister of Defense of Caprica in the decades before the Cylon War, the official who oversaw the U-87 robot program and who was assassinated by the Ha'la'tha after antagonizing the Tauron crime syndicate.
Val Chambers was the Minister of Defense of Caprica some fifty-eight years before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. As Minister he presided over the development of the first Colonial military robot, and his entanglements with both the politics of the contract and the Tauron underworld would lead to his death.
Minister of Defense#
Chambers served as Caprica's Minister of Defense in the era roughly fifty-eight years before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. In that office he oversaw the production of the U-87 prototype military robot by Graystone Industries, the program that would become the foundation of the Colonies' robotic soldiers.
The contract became a matter of political pressure. As delays mounted, other members of the Cabinet began to press the Prime Minister to look elsewhere for the work. Chambers stood with the Cabinet in its determination that the contract must not be handed to the rival Vergis Corporation, a position rooted in an entrenched distrust of Taurons.
Ties to the Ha'la'tha#
Before his appointment as Minister, Chambers had dealt with the Ha'la'tha crime syndicate. By the time he held office he had shunned the organization, and he intended to turn the knowledge he had gained from those earlier dealings to a new purpose, using it to improve the rate of successful prosecutions against the syndicate.
Assassination#
Chambers' dealings with the Tauron underworld proved fatal. After he ordered Yoseef Adama to deliver a racially provocative message to the Guatrau, the head of the Ha'la'tha, the syndicate moved against him. He was assassinated by the Ha'la'tha member Sam Adama. Following his death, the office of Minister of Defense passed to his successor, Joan Leyte.
