Viper Mark III

the third-generation strike fighter

The Viper Mark III was the third generation of the Colonial Viper series of space-superiority fighters, introduced near the end of the First Cylon War as the successor to the Mark II. A single-pilot multi-role strike ship, its design influenced every later Viper up to the advanced Mark VII.

The Viper Mark III was the third generation of the Viper series of space-superiority fighters used by the Colonial Fleet. Introduced toward the end of the First Cylon War as the successor to the venerable Mark II, the third-generation Viper was a single-pilot, multi-role strike ship. Its design inspired the subsequent iterations of the multi-role Viper in the years following the Armistice, culminating in the highly advanced Mark VII.

History#

The Mark III was slated to replace the Mark II, but it was marred both by being much more expensive than its predecessor and by the high budgetary and resource shortages of the war. As a result it saw only limited use in small numbers and had not fully phased out the Mark II by the time of the Armistice. Battlestars such as Galactica had returned to mainly using Mark IIs by the time of Operation Raptor Talon, though Mark IIIs still participated in critical operations such as the Ghost Fleet Offensive. The Mark III was retired at some point after the War, and it is unlikely any remained in service during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies.

Design#

A slightly larger craft than the Mark II, the Mark III featured several functional and cosmetic changes. Its angular forward fuselage contrasted with the rounded profile of the Mark II, while segmented hull plating allowed easy access to the ship's systems for maintenance. Control surfaces were fitted to stabilizer fins for improved atmospheric handling, and the atmospheric intake ports were marginally enlarged into a more squared-off shape. The single-pilot cockpit canopy was slightly curved compared with the hard-edged contours of the earlier models.

The Mark III's three sublight engines differed from the Mark II in that the thrusters' cowlings tapered inward. The fighter also featured cantilevered landing gear for improved stability on planetary touchdowns; its three landing skids retracted flush to the ventral fuselage, eliminating the need for gear bay doors.

Armament and systems#

The fighter was equipped with internally mounted missile launchers, with hardpoints on the underside of the fuselage allowing additional munition pods to be fitted. Its primary dogfighting and strafing armament consisted of twin kinetic energy weapons (KEW) installed on fore-mounted ports and starboard fin struts. Inside the cockpit, a central screen displayed DRADIS scans, system status readouts, and targeting information. Advanced RCS thrusters gave the Mark III improved maneuverability, while tylium fuel powered its sublight engines. The craft was painted gunmetal grey, with white trim running along the upper fuselage and stabilizer fins.
