The hive-mind theory#

It was often said that the beetles got their intelligence from living so close to the Knowledge Towers. MatoroMatoroA quiet Ko-Matoran translator who became a Toa Inika and then a Toa Mahri, Matoro gave his life with the Mask of Life to restore Mata Nui. once put forward a theory to account for the beetles' fixation on the Memory Crystals. He suggested that long ago some beetles ate memory crystals and absorbed knowledge from the crystals they consumed and shared it among themselves through a sort of hive-mind, so that the intelligence of the entire species increased with what any one of them ate.
