Why Did Gehrman Make the Doll?

Bloodborne never says Gehrman made the Doll, or why. The leading reading is that he built her in the image of his student Lady Maria, out of a love the game calls a mania. Here is what the game states, and where the reading takes over.

By Joe Garratt

Bloodborne never says why Gehrman made the Doll, and never says outright that he made her at all. The most popular answer, and it's a reading, not a stated fact, is that Gehrman built her in the likeness of his student Lady Maria, out of a devotion the game describes as bordering on mania. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)

What the game actually says#

The Doll's own lines are the closest the game gets to an origin. When she wonders about the Church and its gods, she asks whether the gods love their creations, and then turns the question on the player: "I am a doll created by you humans, would you ever think to love me?" She adds that of course she loves the hunter, "isn't that how you've made me?" (Bloodborne)

She also describes Gehrman: a hunter long, long ago who now only advises, unseen in the dreaming world. She never calls him her maker. (Bloodborne)

The Hunter's Dream is a copy of the Abandoned Old Workshop in Cathedral Ward. Gehrman calls the dream a former "safe haven for hunters", a workshop where they used blood to strengthen weapons and flesh, and his Burial Blade defined every weapon made at the workshop. If the Doll was made in a workshop, his is the obvious one. (Bloodborne)

The clues that point to Gehrman#

Two items in the real workshop carry most of the weight. The Doll Clothes are discarded doll clothing, "likely spare for dress-up". The description says a deep love for the doll shows in the fine craftsmanship and the care with which they were kept, and that "It borderlines on mania, and exudes a slight warmth." (Bloodborne)

The Small Hair Ornament has been lost for a long time but was once kept with care, and its colour "would stand out most brilliantly against a head of grayish hair". Given it, the Doll says she can't remember a thing, only a yearning she has never felt before. "Tell me hunter, could this be joy?" (Bloodborne)

The word mania comes back in The Old Hunters. The Maria Hunter Cap says that among the first hunters, all students of Gehrman, was the lady hunter Maria, who "had great admiration for Gehrman, unaware of his curious mania". The same word for his devotion and for the love sewn into the doll's clothes is the main reason players connect the three. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)

The Lady Maria connection#

When the player meets Maria at the top of the Astral Clocktower, the likeness to the Doll is plain on screen: the same face, hair colour and build. After Maria is defeated, the Doll says something has changed, that from somewhere deep within she sensed "a liberation from heavy shackles". (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)

The game never says why. The most common reading is that Gehrman made the Doll to resemble Maria, perhaps after he lost her, and that the doll carries something of her that the fight released. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)

So why would he make her?#

These are readings, and the game backs none of them fully.

  • A memorial. Gehrman built a likeness of the student he admired, or loved, after she was gone. The care in the clothes and the hair ornament fit this. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
  • An obsession. The "curious mania" Maria never noticed was his fixation on her, and the Doll is where it ended up. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
  • A helper for the hunt. In the dream the Doll does a job: she channels Blood Echoes into the hunter's strength. Some players think the Dream itself gave her that role, whatever Gehrman first made her for. (Bloodborne)

By the time the player arrives, Gehrman barely mentions her. He offers the new hunter whatever tools are left, "...Even the doll, should it please you...", a line many players hear as cold. (Bloodborne)

The Doll's full story, including her lines in each ending, is on the Doll page, and Gehrman's is on his own page. (Bloodborne)

Frequently asked questions

Did Gehrman make the Doll in Bloodborne?
The game never says so outright. The Doll says she was made by humans, and the clues around her (the workshop, the doll clothes, the word "mania") point to Gehrman, so most players read him as her maker.
Is the Doll based on Lady Maria?
Most players think so. The two look very alike, and the Doll feels "a liberation from heavy shackles" after Maria is defeated. No line in the game confirms it.
Why does Gehrman ignore the Doll?
The game doesn't explain it. His only remark about her is that the hunter may use whatever they find, "even the doll, should it please you", which many players read as a sign she no longer means much to him.
Who does the Small Hair Ornament belong to?
It isn't stated. Its description says it would suit greyish hair, and the Doll reacts to it with a yearning she can't explain. Many players think it was Maria's.
