What Happened to the Doll in Bloodborne?
Bloodborne never tells the Doll's backstory outright. She is a doll made by human hands that came to life in the Hunter's Dream, most likely built by Gehrman in Lady Maria's image, and she remembers nothing of where she came from. Here is what the game shows, what it only hints, and what becomes of her in each ending.
Bloodborne never spells out what happened to the Doll. What it shows is a doll "created by you humans", in her own words, who came to life in the Hunter's Dream and remembers nothing of her past. The leading reading, and it is a reading, is that Gehrman made her in the image of his student Lady Maria. What happens to her at the end depends on which ending the player reaches. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
What the game actually shows#
When the player first reaches the dream, the Doll is a still figure by the path. With at least 1 Insight she moves and speaks, introducing herself as a doll "here in this dream to look after you". Her job is to channel the Blood Echoes the hunter collects into strength. (Bloodborne)
She knows she was made. Hunters have told her about the Church and the gods and their love, she says, and she wonders whether the gods love their creations: "I am a doll created by you humans, would you ever think to love me?" Of course she loves the hunter, she adds, "isn't that how you've made me?" (Bloodborne)
She never says who made her, and she never calls Gehrman her maker. She only describes him as a hunter from long ago who now advises, unseen, and stays in the dream because that is his purpose. (Bloodborne)
The clues to her past#
The Hunter's Dream is a copy of the Abandoned Old Workshop in Cathedral Ward, and two items found in the real workshop point at the Doll. (Bloodborne)
- Doll Clothes. Spare doll clothing, "likely spare for dress-up". The deep love that went into making and keeping them, the description says, "borderlines on mania". (Bloodborne)
- Small Hair Ornament. Long lost but once kept with care, and its colour would suit greyish hair. Give it to the Doll and she says she can't remember a thing, only a yearning she has never felt. "Tell me hunter, could this be joy?" (Bloodborne)
The Old Hunters adds the third piece. The Maria Hunter Cap says Maria, one of Gehrman's students, admired him, "unaware of his curious mania". The same word for his devotion and for the love sewn into the doll's clothes is why so many players connect the three. The full case is on why Gehrman made the Doll. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
Lady Maria and the "heavy shackles"#
At the top of the Astral Clocktower, the player finally meets Maria, and the likeness is plain: the same face, hair colour and build. Beat her and go back to the dream, and the Doll says something strange. "Have I somehow changed?" From some place, perhaps deep within, she sensed "a liberation from heavy shackles". (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
Interpretation: the most common reading is that the Doll was made to stand in for Maria, perhaps after Maria was gone, and that something of Maria bound to her was released when the hunter put Maria to rest. A second reading is that the hair ornament was Maria's. The game confirms neither. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
Interpretation: what the Doll went through between being made and waking for the player is a blank. Gehrman's own offer of the workshop's leftovers, "even the doll, should it please you", suggests she had long stopped meaning much to him. (Bloodborne)
What happens to the Doll in each ending#
After the Orphan of Kos dies, she says she can hear Gehrman sleeping calmly for once, as if something had eased his suffering. Then the night ends, and every ending keeps her. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters; Bloodborne)
- Yharnam Sunrise. The hunter lets Gehrman end the dream. The Doll says farewell: "May you find your worth in the waking world." On a new game she prays at a grave for a hunter who "eventually saw the light of dawn". (Bloodborne)
- Honoring Wishes. The hunter beats Gehrman and is claimed by the Moon Presence. The Doll pushes the hunter, now in Gehrman's wheelchair, past the workshop: "And so... the hunt begins again." (Bloodborne)
- Childhood's Beginning. The hunter kills the Moon Presence and becomes an infant Great One. The Doll lifts the child from the ground: "Are you cold? Oh, Good Hunter." (Bloodborne)
Interpretation: in every version she stays in the dream and goes on serving. Our reading is that Childhood's Beginning is the gentlest outcome for her, since for once the hunter she looks after is newly born rather than trapped or leaving. (Bloodborne)
Each ending is set out in full on Bloodborne's endings explained.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the Doll alive?
- In the Hunter's Dream, yes. She moves, talks and prays once the hunter has at least 1 Insight. Outside the dream she is never seen, and the game never explains what brought her to life.
- Does the Doll die in Bloodborne?
- No. She survives all three endings. She bids the hunter farewell in Yharnam Sunrise, serves the hunter in Gehrman's place in Honoring Wishes, and picks up the infant hunter in Childhood's Beginning.
- Why can't the Doll remember the hair ornament?
- The game doesn't say. She tells the hunter she can't remember a thing, only a yearning she has never felt before. The most common reading is that it belonged to whoever she was modelled on, usually taken to be Lady Maria.
- What happens to the Doll after you beat Lady Maria?
- She says she has changed somehow, that from somewhere deep within she sensed a liberation from heavy shackles. The game never explains it.

Is Gehrman Evil?
Nothing in Bloodborne shows Gehrman as evil. He is a worn-out old hunter trapped in the Hunter's Dream who offers the player a merciful way out. But the game also hints at a "curious mania", a bargain with the Moon Presence and a past he may want to forget. Here is the evidence on both sides.

Why Did Gehrman Make the Doll?
Bloodborne never says Gehrman made the Doll, or why. The leading reading is that he built her in the image of his student Lady Maria, out of a love the game calls a mania. Here is what the game states, and where the reading takes over.

Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower: Gehrman's Student and the Nightmare's Guardian
Lady Maria is the hunter waiting in the Astral Clocktower in The Old Hunters. She was one of Gehrman's first students, a distant relative of the Cainhurst queen, and the keeper of the Nightmare's real secret. Here is what the game states about her, and what players infer.
The Doll: Who Is the Doll in Bloodborne?
The Doll is the living doll in the Hunter's Dream who turns Blood Echoes into strength. She's polite, gentle and unsure whether her own love is real. Here is everything the game says about her, plus the popular reading that she was made in Lady Maria's image.
