Vicar Amelia: the Healing Church Vicar Who Became a Beast
Vicar Amelia heads the Healing Church on the night of the hunt. The hunter finds her praying in the Grand Cathedral before a beast's skull, and she turns into a beast herself. Her pendant holds the words that open the way to Byrgenwerth.
Vicar Amelia is a vicar of the Healing Church, the woman the hunter finds kneeling in the Grand Cathedral at the top of the Cathedral Ward. She is praying to a great beast skull on the altar. When the hunter comes close, she turns into a beast. The trophy reads "Defeat the beast that once was Vicar Amelia." (Bloodborne)
Who Vicar Amelia is#
Amelia's title places her at the head of the Church. The Gold Pendant she carries is "passed down among the vicars who head the Healing Church," and is "a reminder of the cautionary adage, words that will open the gates of Byrgenwerth." Laurence was the first vicar, so the usual reading is that Amelia is one of his successors and holds his office on the night of the hunt. (Bloodborne)
The game doesn't give her a history beyond that. She has no conversation with the hunter and no item tells her story. Everything else comes from her prayer, where she prays, and what she becomes. (Bloodborne)
Amelia's prayer#
She repeats a prayer as the hunter walks up the cathedral: "Our thirst for blood satiates us, soothes our fears. Seek the old blood, but beware the frailty of men. Their wills are weak, minds young." It continues: "Seek the old blood. Let us pray, let us wish to partake in communion. Let us partake in communion and feast upon the old blood." (Bloodborne)
That is close to a summary of the Church's faith. Blood ministration, the healing that made Yharnam famous, rests on the Old Blood, and the warning about "the frailty of men" sits uneasily next to what happens to her a moment later. (Bloodborne)
The beast skull on the altar#
The altar in front of her holds a huge, misshapen skull, clearly not a human one. In the base game nothing names it. The Old Hunters does: Laurence's Skull is the "skull of Laurence, first vicar of the Healing Church. In reality he became the first cleric beast, and his human skull only exists within the Nightmare." (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
Players connect the two. If Laurence became the first cleric beast, the skull on the altar is the beast he became, and the head of the Church is kneeling in front of her founder's remains. The Sword Hunter Badge adds that many Church hunters were clerics, and that clerics became the most hideous beasts of all. Amelia proves it. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
The fight in the Grand Cathedral#
As the hunter approaches, Amelia stands and turns into a tall, pale beast with a long mane, small antlers and long claws. She is still holding the Gold Pendant, and when badly hurt she kneels and prays with it, healing herself in a column of golden light. (Bloodborne)
She is fought after Father Gascoigne, and her death is a gate in the story. The pendant drops, and the skull on the altar can now be touched. (Bloodborne)
What her death opens#
Touching the skull shows a vision. Laurence comes to take his leave of Master Willem, and the two recite their adage, ending with "Fear the old blood." That is the password the hunter needs. With it, the gate to the Forbidden Woods opens, and beyond the woods lies Byrgenwerth. See the story explained for how this fits the wider plot. (Bloodborne)
Her death matters for The Old Hunters too. Once Amelia has fallen, the hunter can be carried into the Hunter's Nightmare, where Laurence himself waits as a burning beast in a nightmare copy of this same cathedral. The full DLC plot is in The Old Hunters story. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
What the game never confirms#
Nobody knows how long Amelia had been fighting the change. Some players think she was praying to hold it off, and that the hunter's arrival tipped her over. Others think she was already lost and the prayer was habit. Her own words warn of weak wills, but the game never says which reading is right. (Bloodborne)
It also never says she knew the skull was Laurence's. The pendant passes "among the vicars", but no text records what the Church taught its vicars about their founder's fate. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
