Yharnam: the City of Blood Ministration in Bloodborne
Yharnam is the gothic city where Bloodborne takes place, famous for a blood cure and cursed by a plague that turns its people into beasts. Here is what the game says about the city, its districts, its history and the Labyrinth beneath it.
Yharnam is the city where Bloodborne takes place, an old gothic town known far and wide for a blood cure. The Blood Minister who treats the hunter in the opening says it plainly: "Yharnam is the home of blood ministration. You need only unravel its mystery." By the time the hunter wakes, the streets belong to beasts and the mobs hunting them. (Bloodborne)
Blood ministration#
Blood is the city's trade. The Blood Vial calls ministration "a unique but common treatment in Yharnam" and says "most Yharnamites are heavy users of blood", since each infusion "recalls the first". The Communion rune says the rune "represents the Healing Church and its ministers. Blood ministration is, of course, the pursuit of communion." (Bloodborne)
The Healing Church came out of Byrgenwerth. The Student Uniform says "the Healing Church has its roots in Byrgenwerth, and naturally borrows heavily from its uniform design." Gehrman tells the hunter the Church and its Blood Ministers "were once guardians of the hunters, in the times of the hunter... Ludwig." (Bloodborne)
The scourge of the beast and the hunt#
The plague is the city's other famous export. The Sword Hunter Badge says Ludwig was the first of the Church's hunters, many of them clerics, and that those clerics became "the most hideous beasts." The Ailing Loran Chalice describes another land destroyed by the same scourge and warns that "some have made the dreaded extrapolation that Yharnam may be next." (Bloodborne)
On nights of the hunt the city closes in on itself. The Hunter Chief Emblem, which belonged to the captain of the Church hunters, says the gate to the Great Cathedral's plaza "is shut tight on nights of the hunt" and could only be opened from the other side with that emblem, so "the captain's return, and this emblem, determined the end of the hunt." (Bloodborne)
The districts#
The hunter starts in Iosefka's Clinic and Central Yharnam, where a note sets the scene: "When the Hunt began, the Healing Church left us, blocking the great bridge to Cathedral Ward, as Old Yharnam burned to the ground that moonlit night." Cathedral Ward is the Church's district, crowned by the Grand Cathedral and, above it, Upper Cathedral Ward, home of the Choir. (Bloodborne)
Old Yharnam lies in a valley, long abandoned and scarred by fire. A note there asks: "The red moon hangs low, and beasts rule the streets. Are we left no other choice, than to burn it all to cinders?" The old hunter Djura guards it and tells the hunter "they're not beasts, they're people." Beyond the city are Hemwick Charnel Lane, the Forbidden Woods and Yahar'gul, the Unseen Village held by the School of Mensis. (Bloodborne)
The Labyrinth beneath#
The city is built over something older. The Chalice of Pthumeru trophy describes "the catacombs that form a web deep below Yharnam", and the Lower Pthumeru Chalice says the Labyrinth "was carved out by the Pthumerians", superhuman beings said to have gained "the wisdom of the eldritch Truth." The hunter explores it through the Chalice Dungeons. (Bloodborne)
The nightmare version#
The Old Hunters shows another Yharnam. The Hunter's Nightmare is a twisted copy of Cathedral Ward and Old Yharnam where blood-drunk hunters hunt forever, tied to the crime at the Fishing Hamlet. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
What the game never confirms#
Yharnam shares its name with Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen, whose trophy calls her "Blood Queen of the Old Labyrinth". Many players assume the city was named after her, but no text explains it. The game also never says what happens to the city after the Yharnam Sunrise ending, beyond the hunter waking to see the morning. For the full sequence, see the timeline and the story explained. Frequently asked questions

- It was burned. A note says the Healing Church blocked the bridge to Cathedral Ward "as Old Yharnam burned to the ground that moonlit night" when the hunt began.

- The old Labyrinth of the Pthumerians, a web of catacombs explored through the Chalice Dungeons. Byrgenwerth's discoveries there started everything.
