Insight in Bloodborne: Eyes on the Inside, and What You See With Them
Insight is Bloodborne's measure of forbidden knowledge. It's a stat you spend like currency, it changes what you can see in Yharnam, and it ties into Master Willem's quest for "eyes on the inside". Here is how it works and what the game says it means.
Insight is a stat in Bloodborne that tracks how much inhuman knowledge the hunter has gained. The game describes it as knowledge "beyond the ken of men". It rises as you meet the horrors of Yharnam, you can spend it like currency, and the more you have, the more of the hidden world you see and the more likely you are to go mad. It's the game's mechanical version of Master Willem's hunt for "eyes on the inside". (Bloodborne)
What is Insight?#
The game's own description has two parts. Insight rises as the character gains knowledge beyond the ken of men, grows as the story goes on, and can be used in online play or traded for items. And: the stat represents "the depth of inhuman knowledge", needed to ring a special bell, "but induces frenzy". (Bloodborne)
That last part is the catch. Frenzy is a status effect that builds when the hunter sees certain horrors, and player testing shows that a hunter with more Insight is more vulnerable to it. Knowing more makes you more fragile. (Bloodborne)
How do you gain Insight?#
Most Insight comes from the story. Player-compiled lists show you get it for encountering a boss and again for killing it, for finding places like the Forsaken Cainhurst Castle or the Fishing Hamlet, and for meeting certain characters for the first time. Speaking to Master Willem at Byrgenwerth gives some. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
Several consumables give it directly, and their descriptions carry the lore:
- Madman's Knowledge, the skull of a madman touched by the wisdom of the Great Ones. Contact with eldritch wisdom is a blessing, it says, even if it drives you mad, because it lets you serve a grander purpose. (Bloodborne)
- Great One's Wisdom, fragments of the lost wisdom of beings "that might be described as gods". It records Willem's epiphany: "We are thinking on the basest of planes. What we need, are more eyes." (Bloodborne)
- One Third of Umbilical Cord, a great relic every infant Great One has. Using it grants Insight and, "so they say, eyes on the inside", though no one remembers what that truly entails. (Bloodborne)
- Blood Dregs, which the Vilebloods of Cainhurst gather for their queen, also give Insight. (Bloodborne)
What does Insight change?#
Player testing has worked out what each level changes. At 1 Insight the Doll in the Hunter's Dream wakes and starts to speak, and a Bath Messenger appears who sells items for Insight. Summoning bells in online play cost Insight to use. (Bloodborne)
As Insight climbs, Yharnam looks different. At high levels giant Amygdalae can be seen clinging to buildings in Cathedral Ward before the blood moon, and the music of the Hunter's Dream can change. Enemies such as the Church Servants also gain new attacks. These thresholds also come from player testing, not from text in the game. (Bloodborne)
The Eye rune adds another detail. It is a transcription of "Eye" as spoken by left-behind Great Ones, it "allows one to make additional discoveries", and it says eyes stand for the truth Willem sought when he looked to beings of higher planes and tried to line his brain with eyes. (Bloodborne)
Insight and the eyes on the inside#
The idea of inner eyes runs through the game. Willem wanted more eyes. The Choir covered their own eyes in his honour. Micolash begs for eyes to be planted on his brain "to cleanse our beastly idiocy". The Accursed Brew is a skull from the Fishing Hamlet that was forcibly searched for eyes. Brain Fluid, from a Church patient, calls the writhing fluid in the head "the initial makings of internal eyes". (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
The most common reading is that Insight is the hunter's own progress toward those eyes. As it rises, the hunter sees what was always there, such as the Amygdalae and the red moon. The game never states that Insight and "eyes on the inside" are the same thing, but it gives the stat and the relics the same language. (Bloodborne)
