The Healing Church: the Faith That Gave Yharnam the Blood
The Healing Church is the religion that rules Yharnam in Bloodborne. Scholars from Byrgenwerth founded it on the old blood, built a city of blood ministration around it, and armed hunters to clean up what that blood turned people into. Here is what the game actually says about it, and where the theories begin.
The Healing Church is the religious order that rules Yharnam in Bloodborne. It was founded on the old blood, a substance scholars of Byrgenwerth found deep underground, and it built its power on blood ministration, the transfusions that made Yharnam famous for healing. It also founded the Church hunters, and its upper ranks, the Choir and the School of Mensis, chased the Great Ones themselves. (Bloodborne)
Where did the Healing Church come from?#
The game says plainly that the Church has its roots in Byrgenwerth. The Byrgenwerth student uniform notes that the Church "borrows heavily" from its design. Alfred, the Executioner hunter, gives the clearest version of the founding: a group of young Byrgenwerth scholars found a holy medium deep within the tomb of the gods carved out below Yharnam, and that led to the Healing Church and to blood healing. He adds that the Church has since declared Byrgenwerth forbidden ground. (Bloodborne)
The founder named in the game is Laurence. His skull, found in The Old Hunters, calls him the first vicar of the Healing Church. A vision at the Grand Cathedral shows him parting from his teacher, Master Willem, with both men repeating the adage "fear the old blood", and a note in the cathedral tells the faithful to inscribe "Master Laurence's adage" upon their flesh. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
What is blood ministration?#
Blood ministration is the Church's central rite, a blood transfusion. The Blood Vial description says once a patient has had their blood ministered, every later infusion recalls the first, and it adds that most Yharnamites are heavy users of blood. The Communion rune says it represents the Healing Church and its ministers, and that blood ministration is "the pursuit of communion". (Bloodborne)
Vicar Amelia's prayer, said before her fight, sums up the faith: seek the old blood, beware the frailty of men, and partake in communion. A Byrgenwerth sedative notes that scholars of the arcane calm their nerves with thick human blood, which "naturally" leads to reliance on ministration. The Pungent Blood Cocktail jokes that Yharnam produces more blood than alcohol because blood is more intoxicating. (Bloodborne)
The Church hunters and the workshop#
At first the hunt belonged to Gehrman and his workshop. The Church built its own. Ludwig's Holy Blade says the Healing Church workshop began with Ludwig and departed from old Gehrman's technique to fight more terrible beasts "and perhaps things still worse". Gehrman himself tells the player that the Church and its Blood Ministers were once guardians of the hunters in Ludwig's time. (Bloodborne)
The item text is blunt about what Church hunting meant. The Sword Hunter Badge says many Church hunters were clerics, and clerics turned into the most hideous beasts. The Black Church Garb says Church hunters were doctors who believed in early prevention, which they achieved by disposing of victims, and even potential victims, before any signs of sickness. (Bloodborne)
The Church also made war on Cainhurst. Alfred says a Byrgenwerth scholar betrayed his fellows and took forbidden blood to Cainhurst Castle, where the first Vilebloods were born, and that Martyr Logarius led his Executioners into the castle to cleanse it. The Executioner Garb says it later became the basis for all Church attire. (Bloodborne)
The Choir, the School of Mensis and the Research Hall#
The Upper Cathedral Key states that the upper ranks of the Church are formed by the School of Mensis, based in the Unseen Village, and the Choir in the Upper Cathedral Ward. The Orphanage Key adds that the Choir was a creation of the Church's orphanage and later split from the Church. (Bloodborne)
In The Old Hunters, the Research Hall shows the other side of the Church. It is full of patients with swollen heads and failed experiments. The Blood of Adeline item says Adeline was one of the Blood Saints the Church treated in order to produce worthy blood, and one of the few cases that turned out well. Brain Fluid says that in the Church's early days the Great Ones were linked to the ocean, so patients drank water and listened for the sea. Simon the Harrowed calls the place the true face of the blood-worshipping, beast-purging Healing Church. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
Did the Healing Church cause the beast plague?#
The game never says it in so many words. What it does show: Laurence, the first vicar, became the first cleric beast. A note in the Lecture Building says Master Willem was right and that evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race. When the hunt began, a note in Central Yharnam says, the Church left Old Yharnam, blocked the bridge to Cathedral Ward, and the old town burned. (Bloodborne; Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
The most common reading is that the scourge of beasts spread through the Church's own blood, and that the Church then hunted down the results. Another popular theory says the Church caused the "ashen blood" sickness in Old Yharnam so it could arrive with a cure. That one has much less in-game support, and the game never confirms it. (Bloodborne)
There's also a quieter hint. The Formless Oedon rune says Oedon, a Great One with no form, seeks the precious blood along with his "inadvertent worshippers". The Church's chapel and tomb both carry Oedon's name, so many players read the Church as serving a Great One it doesn't understand. That is interpretation, not something the game states. (Bloodborne)
