Alfred, Hunter of Vilebloods: Logarius's Protégé and the Fall of Annalise
Alfred is the friendly Executioner the hunter meets praying in the Cathedral Ward. He is cheerful, helpful and devoted to his dead master, Martyr Logarius, right up to the moment he beats a queen into pulp. Here is his story as the game tells it.
Alfred, Hunter of Vilebloods, is an Executioner hunter in Bloodborne and the self-declared protégé of Martyr Logarius. The hunter finds him kneeling in prayer in the Cathedral Ward. He offers to work together and swap what each has learned, and he means it. His real goal is Cainhurst, where his master died, and the undying queen who still lives there. (Bloodborne)
Who is Alfred?#
He introduces himself as a beast hunter turned hunter of Vilebloods, and as the protégé of Master Logarius. "Our prey might differ, but we are hunters, the both of us," he says. "Why not co-operate, and discuss the things we've learned?" (Bloodborne)
His gear places him. He wears the Executioner Garb, "attire worn by the band of executioners commanded by the martyr Logarius." The garb says it later became the basis for all Church attire. At Cainhurst he wears the Gold Ardeo, which represents "an unflagging resolve to face impurity", and carries Logarius' Wheel, a weapon "used to slaughter the Vilebloods in Cainhurst." (Bloodborne)
The Executioners were fanatics, and their own items admit it. The Wheel Hunter Badge calls their workshop "a secretive enclave of mystical beliefs and heady fanaticism". The Radiance rune says they would never cooperate with hunters who serve the undead queen, "no matter what the circumstances". (Bloodborne)
What Alfred tells the hunter#
Alfred is one of the game's best sources on early history, though he speaks for the Church. On Byrgenwerth, he says young scholars found a holy medium deep within the tomb of the gods below Yharnam, which led to the Healing Church and blood healing. "In this sense, everything sacred in Yharnam can be traced back to Byrgenwerth." The college now lies abandoned in the woods, and the Church has declared it forbidden ground. (Bloodborne)
On the Vilebloods he repeats his master's teaching: "Once a scholar betrayed his fellows at Byrgenwerth and brought forbidden blood back with him to Cainhurst Castle. It was there that the first of the inhuman Vilebloods was born." He adds that their ruler is still alive. (Bloodborne)
On Logarius he grows sad. Logarius led his Executioners into the castle to cleanse it, "but all did not go well", and Logarius was left behind in the Vilebloods' domain. Alfred wants to free him "so that he may be properly honoured in martyrdom." (Bloodborne)
The road to Cainhurst#
Alfred can't find the way to the castle. The hunter can: the Cainhurst Summons, found in Iosefka's Clinic, is "rather bafflingly" addressed to them, and a stagecoach from Hemwick carries them across. (Bloodborne)
At Cainhurst, Logarius sits on the rooftop wearing the Crown of Illusions. Its description says he put it on "of his own volition, determined to prevent a single soul from stumbling upon the vile secret." After the hunter defeats him, the crown reveals the hidden chamber of Queen Annalise. On a desk there lies the Unopened Summons, an invitation to Cainhurst with no addressee. (Bloodborne)
Bring it back to Alfred and he is thrilled, having "heard tell of Cainhurst nobles and their amusingly pompous invitations." He hands over the Wheel Hunter Badge as thanks and takes the summons as a sign: "Ah! I feel my Master's hand at work!" Then he leaves for the castle. (Bloodborne)
What Alfred does to the queen#
The hunter finds him in the queen's chamber, standing over what is left of Annalise. "Master, look! I've done it! I've done it! I've smashed, and pounded and grounded this rotten siren into fleshy pink pulp!" He mocks her immortality, then turns to the hunter, pleased: thanks to them, his master "can be canonised as a true martyr." (Bloodborne)
The queen does not stay dead. Her remains become the Queenly Flesh, which "remains warm, as if cursed", and can be used to restore her, as the Queen Annalise page explains. (Bloodborne)
How Alfred dies#
The hunter can kill Alfred in the chamber, and he leaves the Radiance rune. Leave him alone and he returns to the Cathedral Ward, where the hunter later finds him dead, the rune on his body. The game shows no cause. (Bloodborne)
- The usual reading is that Alfred took his own life once his master's work was done, with nothing left to live for. It fits his single-minded devotion, but nothing in the game says how he died. (Bloodborne)
- Players often point to the contrast between the polite hunter of the early game and the gleeful killer in the chamber, and read Alfred as a portrait of Church fanaticism. That is a reading of tone, not a stated fact. (Bloodborne)
Alfred's quest is also covered in the Cainhurst and story explained pages.
Frequently asked questions
- Who is Alfred in Bloodborne?
- Alfred, Hunter of Vilebloods, is an Executioner and the protégé of Martyr Logarius. He hunts the Vilebloods of Cainhurst and wants Logarius honoured as a martyr.
- What happens if you give Alfred the Unopened Summons?
- He goes to Cainhurst and smashes Queen Annalise into a heap of flesh. Afterwards he can be found dead in the Cathedral Ward, and he leaves the Radiance rune.
- Why does Alfred die?
- The game never shows or explains it. Most players read it as suicide once his life's mission was done.
- Should you kill Alfred?
- Killing him at Cainhurst also gives the Radiance rune, so nothing is lost either way. Killing him before he reaches the queen ends his quest and leaves Annalise alone.
