Martyr Logarius: Leader of the Executioners and Guardian of Cainhurst

Martyr Logarius led the Healing Church's Executioners in the slaughter of Cainhurst's Vilebloods, then stayed on the castle roof wearing the Crown of Illusions to hide its secret. Here is what his gear, his protégé Alfred and his crown say about him.

By Joe Garratt

Martyr Logarius is the leader of the Executioners, the band of Healing Church hunters who slaughtered the Vilebloods of Cainhurst. He is found high on the castle roof, sitting on a throne and wearing the old king's crown. The Crown of Illusions says he "donned the crown of his own volition, determined to prevent a single soul from stumbling upon the vile secret." (Bloodborne)

Who Martyr Logarius was#

Logarius commanded a band of Church hunters called the Executioners. Their attire is described as "worn by the band of executioners commanded by the martyr Logarius", and the Executioner Garb says it "later became the basis for all Church attire, with its heavy draping of the Holy Shawl." (Bloodborne)

The order lived by his words. Each piece of the Executioner set quotes him, and the Gold Ardeo puts it this way: "As the great Logarius once said, 'Acts of goodness are not always wise, and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good.'" (Bloodborne)

The Executioners' own items don't hide what they were. The Wheel Hunter Badge says the wheel "symbolizes righteous destiny" and calls their workshop "a secretive enclave of mystical beliefs and heady fanaticism which served as the backbone of the Executioners' unique brand of justice." The Radiance rune, "adopted by the sworn Executioners under Logarius' command," says they "despise the impure Vilebloods." (Bloodborne)

The slaughter at Cainhurst#

The reason for the war comes through Alfred, who passes on "a bit of wisdom, from the eminent Master Logarius": "Once a scholar betrayed his fellows at Byrgenwerth and brought forbidden blood back with him to Cainhurst Castle. It was there that the first of the inhuman Vilebloods was born." He calls them "fiendish creatures who threaten the purity of the Church's blood healing." (Bloodborne)

The weapon tells what happened next. Logarius' Wheel was "used to slaughter the Vilebloods in Cainhurst. Bathed in pools of their blood, and forever steeped in their ire." Its trick form manifests "their lingering rage in a show of utter brilliance." (Bloodborne)

Alfred describes the end. "In his time Master Logarius led his Executioners into Cainhurst Castle to cleanse it of the Vilebloods, but all did not go well. And Master Logarius became a blessed anchor, guarding us from evil." He wants to free him "so that he may be properly honoured in martyrdom." (Bloodborne)

The crown and the vile secret#

The Crown of Illusions is "one of the precious secrets of Cainhurst. The old king's crown is said to reveal illusions, and expose a mirage that hides a secret." Logarius put it on himself, to keep anyone from finding "the vile secret". The item closes with a question: "What visions did he see, sitting serenely upon his new throne?" (Bloodborne)

The hunter reaches him by climbing to the highest roof of the castle. Logarius rises from his throne and fights with a blade in each hand and arcane magic, throwing skulls that burst. Late in the fight he floats into the air and plants a glowing sword in the roof that throws out spinning blades. (Bloodborne)

Once he falls, the crown lies on the roof. Wearing it on the roof reveals a passage that was invisible before. It leads to the chamber of Annalise, Queen of the Vilebloods, who still lives. (Bloodborne)

Alfred and the martyr's legacy#

Alfred, who introduces himself as Logarius's protégé, spends his quest trying to finish his master's work. Once the hunter has cleared the way, he travels to the castle and destroys the queen, then tells the hunter that now "Master can be canonised as a true martyr." He carries Logarius' Wheel when he goes. (Bloodborne)

The queen does not stay dead, as the Queen Annalise page explains. Alfred's devotion is the best picture the game gives of what Logarius meant to the Executioners. (Bloodborne)

What the game never confirms#

The "vile secret" is never named. Because the crown reveals Annalise's chamber, the usual reading is that the secret is the queen herself, and that Logarius sat on the roof to make sure nobody found her. Whether he was keeping her imprisoned, hiding her from the world, or simply couldn't kill her, the game leaves open. (Bloodborne)

Players also argue about his body. He looks shrunken and withered, as though he has sat on that throne for a very long time. How long, and whether he was still truly alive, nothing says. See the timeline for where the raid on Cainhurst most likely falls. (Bloodborne)

Frequently asked questions

Who is Martyr Logarius in Bloodborne?
The leader of the Executioners, a band of Church hunters who slaughtered the Vilebloods of Cainhurst. He sits on the castle roof wearing the Crown of Illusions and is fought there as an optional boss.
What is the vile secret Logarius guards?
The game never names it. Wearing his crown reveals the hidden chamber of Annalise, Queen of the Vilebloods, behind his throne, so the secret is usually read as the queen herself.
Why is Logarius called a martyr?
His followers call him one. Alfred says Logarius led the Executioners into Cainhurst, "all did not go well", and he stayed behind as "a blessed anchor, guarding us from evil". Alfred wants him honoured in martyrdom.
Is Martyr Logarius optional?
Yes. Cainhurst is reached through the Cainhurst Summons and is not needed to finish the game, though Logarius must be beaten to reach Queen Annalise.
