Queen Annalise: the Undying Queen of the Vilebloods
Annalise is the masked queen of Cainhurst, ruler of the Vilebloods and sworn enemy of the Healing Church. She cannot die, she wants an heir, and she will make you a Vileblood if you kneel. Here is what the game says about her and what players infer.
Annalise, Queen of the Vilebloods, is the ruler of Castle Cainhurst and the last of its royal line. She sits masked on a hidden throne behind Martyr Logarius, sworn enemy of the Healing Church and, in her own words, prisoner to a wretched mask. She cannot die, she longs for an heir, and she offers to make the player a Vileblood. (Bloodborne)
Who is Queen Annalise?#
Annalise introduces herself only after the player kneels: "I am Annalise, Queen of Castle Cainhurst. Ruler of the Vilebloods, and sworn enemy of the church. Yet, our people are murdered, and we are prisoner to this wretched mask." She speaks in an old, formal English, using "We" and "thou", and calls the player a "moon-scented hunter". (Bloodborne)
The Maria Hunter Cap calls her "the undead queen", and says Lady Maria was distantly related to her. (Bloodborne: The Old Hunters)
How did Cainhurst fall?#
Alfred tells the Church's side. A scholar betrayed his fellows at Byrgenwerth and brought forbidden blood to Cainhurst Castle, and there the first Vilebloods were born, "fiendish creatures who threaten the purity of the Church's blood healing". Logarius led his Executioners into the castle to cleanse it, but "all did not go well", and Logarius never came back. (Bloodborne)
The Executioners' gear backs this up. Logarius' Wheel was used to slaughter the Vilebloods in Cainhurst and is "forever steeped in their ire". (Bloodborne)
The Crown of Illusions explains why Annalise is hidden. The old king's crown reveals illusions and exposes a secret. "And so Logarius donned the crown of his own volition, determined to prevent a single soul from stumbling upon the vile secret." Wearing the crown, taken from Logarius after beating him, reveals the queen's chamber behind his throne. (Bloodborne)
The Vilebloods#
Annalise asks the player to swear an oath against the Church and drink her "rotted blood". "Now, thou'rt too a Vileblood. We two, the very last on this earth." (Bloodborne)
The Vilebloods hunt hunters. The Blood Dreg says they see these things in the blood of echo fiends, "that is to say, the blood of hunters", and that Annalise partakes in these offerings "so that she may one day bear the Child of Blood, the next Vileblood heir". The Cainhurst Badge says the hunter who joins them must decide whether to borrow their strength or become one of them, heart and soul. The Vileblood Register records those loyal to her covenant "throughout the ages". (Bloodborne)
Other Cainhurst gear paints the culture: the Chikage, carried by her royal guards, sings scarlet when soaked in blood but eats away at the wielder; the Knight's Garb calls the Cainhurst way "a mix of nostalgia and bombast". (Bloodborne)
Alfred and the Queenly Flesh#
Alfred, Logarius's protégé, wants his master honoured as a martyr. Once the player has beaten Logarius and found the Unopened Summons in the queen's chamber, giving it to Alfred sends him to the castle. Later the player finds him in the queen's chamber, boasting that he has pounded "this rotten siren into fleshy pink pulp". (Bloodborne)
The Queenly Flesh is all that remains: "This pinkish lump of flesh remains warm, as if cursed. All hail the undying queen of blood!" Offered at the Altar of Despair, it brings her back. When attacked, Annalise says only, "If only our life was so easily forfeit." (Bloodborne)
Offer her the Ring of Betrothal and she refuses gently: she has little need of a consort, such a path would "belike lead to further ruin", but the hunter is dear to her. (Bloodborne)
What fans read into Annalise#
- Many players believe the Vilebloods descend from the Pthumerians of the tombs beneath Yharnam, or that Annalise's undying flesh comes from a Great One. Reviving her at the Altar of Despair, beside a creature like Rom, feeds this idea. The game never confirms either. (Bloodborne)
- The scholar who, in Alfred's words, betrayed his fellows is never named. Fans have candidates; the game gives none. (Bloodborne)
- Annalise's wish for a Child of Blood fits the game's wider theme of Great Ones longing for a child, but she is never called a Great One. (Bloodborne)
Frequently asked questions
