How Did the Marker Get on Aegis VII?

People put it there. The Marker on Aegis VII, Marker 3A, was a man-made copy of the alien Black Marker, grown by the Sovereign Colonies government about two centuries before Dead Space and planted on the remote planet as an experiment. Here is how it got there, and how it ended up on the Ishimura.

By Joe Garratt

The Marker on Aegis VII was put there by people. Marker 3A was a Red Marker, a man-made copy of the alien Black Marker, grown by the Sovereign Colonies government and planted on the remote planet as an experiment about two centuries before Dead Space. When it caused an outbreak, the government sealed the system and buried the records. In 2508 an illegal mining colony dug it back up. (Dead Space; Dead Space: Catalyst; Dead Space 3)

The original: the Black Marker#

The story starts on Earth. The Black Marker, an alien artifact, hit the planet about 65 million years ago at what's now the Chicxulub crater. In 2214 a government team raised it from the sea floor, its signal set off the first known outbreak, and the cover-up gave rise to the Church of Unitology. The novel Dead Space: Martyr tells that story. (Dead Space: Martyr)

Copies on distant worlds#

About eighty years later, the Sovereign Colonies, the government of the day, learned to copy the Black Marker. The copies, called Red Markers, were grown rather than carved, and the government set them up on remote worlds to study them. The novel Dead Space: Catalyst follows the fall of one of those worlds, Aspera. Another copy, Marker 3A, went to Aegis VII. (Dead Space: Catalyst; Dead Space 3)

On Aegis VII the Marker did what Markers do. Its signal drove the people around it mad, the dead rose, and the outbreak produced the Hive Mind, a huge Necromorph linked to the Marker. Set on its pedestal, the Marker held the creature in check. The Sovereign Colonies abandoned the site and sealed the system off, and the Marker stayed buried. (Dead Space; Dead Space 3)

The 2023 remake of Dead Space adds text logs that refer to the other Red Marker worlds, tying Aegis VII more clearly to that wider programme. (Dead Space (2023))

How it got from the planet to the Ishimura#

Two centuries later, Aegis VII was still off-limits. The CEC set up a mining colony there anyway, illegally. In 2508 the colonists dug up Marker 3A, and the planet cracker USG Ishimura arrived to break open the crust. Its captain, Benjamin Mathius, was a Unitologist, and he had the Marker brought aboard as a holy relic. (Dead Space; Dead Space: Downfall)

That move pulled the Marker off its pedestal. Madness and murder spread through the colony, the dead rose as Necromorphs, and the outbreak reached the ship. The animated film Dead Space: Downfall shows those weeks in full. (Dead Space: Downfall)

Kendra's reveal#

Isaac Clarke learns the truth late in the first game. The scientist Terrence Kyne persuades him that putting the Marker back on its pedestal will quiet the Hive Mind. Then Kendra Daniels shoots Kyne and reveals she works for EarthGov. She tells Isaac the Marker is a government artifact, a copy made by humans, and that the CEC had no business digging it up. She takes it for herself, and Isaac has to win it back to finish the job. (Dead Space)

Isaac does return it to the pedestal. The pulse quiets the Hive Mind, but it also plants the blueprints for building a Marker in his head, which drives the next two games. (Dead Space)

Our reading, and it's only a reading: the Aegis VII Marker is the series' first big hint that the real danger isn't one alien object but the fact that the Markers can be copied. Humanity spread them itself. For more, see Marker 3A, the Dead Space story and the Dead Space timeline. (Dead Space; Dead Space 3)

Frequently asked questions

Was the Marker on Aegis VII made by aliens?
No. Marker 3A was a Red Marker, a copy of the alien Black Marker grown by humans. Kendra Daniels reveals in Dead Space that it was a government artifact, not an alien one.
Why was Aegis VII off-limits?
Because of the Marker. After Marker 3A set off a Necromorph outbreak there, the Sovereign Colonies sealed off the system and buried the records. The CEC set up its mining colony illegally.
Who found the Marker on Aegis VII?
The colonists of the CEC's illegal mining colony dug it up in 2508. The Ishimura's Unitologist captain, Benjamin Mathius, then had it brought aboard the ship as a holy relic.
Where is the original Black Marker?
It was found on Earth in 2214 at the bottom of the Chicxulub crater, where it had lain since it hit the planet around 65 million years ago. The Red Markers, including the one on Aegis VII, were all copied from it.
