Poul Clarke
Ship Architect and Father of Isaac Clarke
Poul Clarke was a decorated ship architect of the Galactic Union Merchant Marine Corp and the father of Isaac Clarke. His long absences from home left his wife Octavia vulnerable to the Church of Unitology, and his life ended in a murder-suicide that the Church moved at once to exploit.
Poul Clarke was a ship architect employed by the Galactic Union Merchant Marine Corp and the father of Isaac Clarke. A renowned builder of ships, he had earned multiple awards and commendations and had amassed a considerable estate through his work. His wife was Octavia Clarke, Isaac's mother and a Unitologist, and his long absences from Earth shaped the course of his family's fate.
Career and absences#
Poul Clarke worked as a ship architect with the Galactic Union Merchant Marine Corp, the same service his son Isaac would later enter. He was held in high regard for his craft, accumulating numerous awards and commendations and a considerable fortune. The demands of his work kept him away from his family for long periods, broken only by a single reassignment to Earth during the first four years of Isaac's life. When that posting ended he departed on an extended off-world tour during which he seemingly disappeared.
His service record was treated as highly classified. Unknown to Isaac, the government held files on his father marked Top Secret, and Isaac's repeated efforts to locate him were turned aside. His prolonged absence weighed heavily on his wife Octavia, whose mental health declined and who turned to the Church of Unitology while he was gone.
Death#
In the account preserved in the 2023 Remake, Poul returned home from an extended tour whose events EarthGov had classified. By that time Octavia had fallen fully under her Unitologist conditioning, and she killed Poul in a murder-suicide. Although he had never been a member of the Church, the Church of Unitology moved in immediately after the deaths and took both bodies, leaving Isaac unable to say goodbye to either parent.
Name#
Like his wife Octavia and his son Isaac, Poul Clarke bore a name drawn from revered science fiction authors, in his case the writers Poul Anderson and Arthur C. Clarke.
