Sam Caldwell
Aegis VII Engineer Driven Mad by Marker 3A
Sam Caldwell was an engineer on the Aegis VII Colony and a member of the Extraction Dig Team who, under the influence of Marker 3A, hallucinated enemies and slaughtered his own crew before being shot and learning the truth as he died.
Sam Caldwell was an engineer on the Aegis VII Colony and a member of the Extraction Dig Team that pulled Marker 3A from its pedestal. As the artifact's influence took hold, he was driven by hallucinations to kill the very colleagues he believed he was fighting through, and he learned the truth only as he lay dying.
Background and the Extraction#
Little was recorded of Sam Caldwell's early life. He eventually joined the Concordance Extraction Corporation, and at some point was assigned to the Aegis VII colony, where he met and began a relationship with Lexine. He was called on to help with the excavation of Marker 3A. When the dig team lifted the Marker from its pedestal, it flashed brightly and released a powerful energy wave that disrupted the colony's equipment, deactivating life support, impairing communications, and damaging one of the gravity tethers. Sam's crew broke off from the main extraction team to repair the tether, and on the way they met miners and engineers already sunk into violent dementia, forcing them to kill several colonists.
Descent and hallucinations#
As they pushed down into the Megavent, Sam began to see strange Unitology-related script appearing and vanishing before him, and to hear voices, among them Lexine's. On reaching the level they needed, Sterling broke off to help someone the group had heard, while Sam and Egan continued toward Gravity Tether 16. Egan began showing signs of dementia and eventually attacked Sam, who was forced to shoot his friend. Sam reached the tether alone and repaired it using an appropriated Stasis Module.
Soon after, he managed to contact Lexine through the colony's less damaged communications. Told that some of the life support systems were down, he located and reactivated them, then fought his way toward the lift through numerous attackers. Near the lift, after taking down a lone attacker, he had a chilling revelation: the attacker was Sterling.
Death and revelation#
Driven on by his need to reach Lexine, Sam moved toward the descending lift only to find more deranged figures bearing down on him. Before he could act, one of them shot him. Fatally wounded, he watched them advance and resolve into Planetary Security officers. In that moment he understood that he had been hallucinating the whole time and had killed his entire team. Sam died of his injuries shortly afterward, his killing spree noted by the colony's chief medical officer, who remarked that he was going to have a busy day.
