Dead Space: Extraction Story Explained: Plot Summary and Ending

The full story of Dead Space: Extraction, the prequel that follows a handful of survivors from the dying Aegis VII colony onto the infested Ishimura, and what its bleak final scene means for Lexine and Gabe.

By Joe Garratt

Dead Space: Extraction came out in September 2009, a year after the first game. It's a prequel set in 2508 that tells the story of the outbreak from the ground: first on the Aegis VII Colony, then aboard the USG Ishimura in the days before Isaac Clarke arrived. Its heroes are a colony detective, Nathan McNeill, a ship's security officer, Gabe Weller, and a young surveyor, Lexine Murdoch. This page covers the whole story, so it has full spoilers. (Dead Space: Extraction)

Before the story begins#

The CEC was running an illegal mining colony on Aegis VII, and its planet cracker, the Ishimura, was overhead to break off a slab of the planet's crust. Down in the colony's dig site lay a Marker, a tall red spire carved with alien script. The Church of Unitology knew about it, and its people were placed on the ship. You don't need to have played Dead Space or watched Downfall first, but the game assumes you know the Marker is the cause of everything going wrong. (Dead Space: Extraction; Dead Space: Downfall)

The Marker comes up#

The first chapter belongs to Sam Caldwell, an engineer on the extraction dig team and Lexine's boyfriend. When the team lifted the Marker off its pedestal, it let out a pulse that knocked out life support, damaged communications and broke one of the colony's gravity tethers. Sam's crew went down into the Megavents to fix the tether. On the way he started seeing alien script flicker in front of him and hearing voices, Lexine's among them. (Dead Space: Extraction)

Everyone around him seemed to turn violent. He was forced to shoot his friend Egan, repaired the tether, restored life support and fought his way back towards the lift, desperate to reach Lexine. Then one of the attackers he'd killed turned out to be his own teammate Sterling. A moment later Sam was shot. As he lay dying, the figures standing over him turned into colony police. He'd been hallucinating all along, and the people he'd killed were his friends. Nathan McNeill was the officer who fired. (Dead Space: Extraction)

The colony falls#

Days later, Nathan was still working the Caldwell case when Gabe Weller came down from the Ishimura with a small team. Gabe was an old friend from the Resource Wars, and his orders were to collect the bodies of the Unitologists who had killed themselves in Union Square. The morgue was empty. Staff there attacked them, and outside the whole colony had gone mad. One of Gabe's own men, Karklins, turned on them and Nathan had to kill him. The two barricaded themselves in police headquarters. (Dead Space: Extraction)

There they met their first Necromorphs and found Lexine hiding in the control room. Gabe wanted her to go home and lock the door. Nathan brought her along. On the way out they watched an Infector turn a corpse into a Slasher, and Lexine said what all three were thinking: the monsters weren't aliens, they were people. (Dead Space: Extraction)

At the shuttle bay they watched a fleeing shuttle crash and wreck every other ship on the pad. In the debris they found Warren Eckhardt, a senior CEC executive, who said he had a survey shuttle, the Vestri, waiting on the far side of the colony. Getting there meant going back through the Megavents, where an audio log from a surveyor suggested the Marker might be behind the madness. At the shuttle, the Hive Mind burst out of the ground, killed Gabe's last two officers and nearly took the Vestri down as it lifted off. (Dead Space: Extraction)

Aboard the Ishimura#

The Ishimura refused them permission to dock and opened fire with its defence cannons. Gabe and Eckhardt crash-landed on the hull, and the four spacewalked to a maintenance airlock. When it blew, it threw Lexine out into space, and Nathan pulled her back. Inside, the ship was already infested. A roaming security squad caught them in a mess hall, stunned Nathan and locked the group in the medical quarantine wing. (Dead Space: Extraction)

There they were examined by the ship's senior medical officer, Nicole Brennan. She found Lexine's blood pressure and brain activity off the charts but cleared them all of infection. Eckhardt took an unusual interest in Lexine's results. When a quarantine lockdown trapped Gabe, Nathan crawled through the vents to override it, and the group found Captain Benjamin Mathius dead in the morgue. Nicole stayed behind with security in the Medical Deck while the four headed for Engineering, where another team needed help. (Dead Space: Extraction)

The trams were down, so they walked the tunnels. A weak ventilation cover gave way under them and dropped them into the sewers. A swarm of Swarmers dragged Lexine under the water, and the others gave her up for dead. Soon after, all three men began to hallucinate. Under the Hydroponics Deck they met Dr. Karen Howell, then had to fight off the Urchin, a huge creature living in the waterways. (Dead Space: Extraction)

Lexine wasn't dead. Howell had found her, treated her headaches and protected her from a Brute, and the two caught up with the men in Hydroponics. Nathan, Gabe and Lexine went ahead to secure a tram while Eckhardt stayed to guard Howell as she sealed the creatures in the sewers. Eckhardt came back alone and said she had sacrificed herself. In truth, Howell knew about his faith, and he had let a Necromorph tentacle take her. (Dead Space: Extraction)

Eckhardt's secret#

The group split to find a shuttle. Nathan and Lexine searched the Flight Deck and came up empty. Gabe and Eckhardt found a working one on the Maintenance Deck, in Bay 47, after an Exploder killed the young officer guarding the control room. (Dead Space: Extraction)

Then Gabe walked in on Eckhardt finishing a message and played it back. Eckhardt was an Overseer in the Church of Unitology. He'd been sent to Aegis VII to find someone who could resist the Marker, and he'd found her: whenever Lexine was nearby, the hallucinations stopped. He planned to deliver her to the Church without ever telling her why, and the message showed his part in Howell's death. Eckhardt shot Gabe to keep him quiet, and a Leaper killed Eckhardt seconds later. (Dead Space: Extraction)

While searching for Bay 47, Nathan and Lexine came across a live transmission from the Medical Deck. It was Nicole, recording her farewell to Isaac. It ran one way, so they could only watch as she killed herself. Lexine started to think she was a curse on everyone near her: Sam, her father, Howell, now Nicole. (Dead Space: Extraction; Dead Space)

The ending explained#

At Bay 47 they found Eckhardt dead and Gabe barely conscious. Gabe told them Eckhardt had been a Unitologist who'd gone mad, but kept quiet about what he'd wanted with Lexine. One problem was left. The shuttle couldn't get past the Ishimura's cannons, so someone had to shut them down from the Captain's Nest on the Bridge. Gabe was too badly hurt, so Nathan went alone, and his hallucinations came thicker and faster on the way. (Dead Space: Extraction)

He shut down the last cannon on the hull and was attacked by the Spider, a giant Necromorph that pinned his arm to the deck with a spike as his suit leaked air. He cut off his own right hand to get free. Back at the bay, Gabe and Lexine had been holding off the creatures and getting the shuttle ready, and they'd nearly given him up. Nathan staggered in, one-handed, and they launched. (Dead Space: Extraction)

As they cleared the ship, Nathan announced he was retiring and told Lexine to set a course for Titan Station. Then the radio picked up the USG Kellion hailing the Ishimura. Lexine tried to warn them off, but the debris from the planet crack blocked the signal. Gabe drifted off to sleep. In the last shot, a Necromorph comes at Lexine in the cockpit, and the game cuts away. It never shows who it is. The obvious reading is that Nathan, who'd lost a hand and a lot of blood, died in his seat and turned. Severed fits that, because three years later only Gabe and Lexine are living on Titan. (Dead Space: Extraction; Dead Space 2: Severed)

What it means: Extraction is a story about who survives a Marker outbreak and why. Sam proves anyone can be turned into a killer. Eckhardt proves the Church knew more than it let on, and would sacrifice anyone to learn more. And Lexine, who never seems to hallucinate at all, turns out to be the thing everyone wants, without ever knowing it. That's the question the game leaves open. Nobody explains her immunity. Gabe knows something's special about her and chooses not to tell her. (Dead Space: Extraction)

The other sting is the Kellion. Lexine's failed warning is the moment Extraction hands over to Dead Space, and the same distress beacon Alissa Vincent died launching is about to bring Isaac aboard a ship that has already killed almost everyone. (Dead Space: Extraction; Dead Space: Downfall; Dead Space)

What it sets up#

Extraction ends where Dead Space story explained: plot summary and ending begins, with the Kellion arriving. For the ship's side of the same weeks, see Dead Space: Downfall explained. Gabe and Lexine's story picks up three years later on Titan, where they've married and settled, and where EarthGov's Oracle Program has been watching them in case Lexine's child shares her gift. Dead Space 2: Severed tells that story, and the Dead Space timeline shows how it lines up with everything else. (Dead Space 2: Severed)

Frequently asked questions

Is Dead Space: Extraction canon?
Yes. It sits in the same continuity as the main games and covers the days just before Isaac Clarke reaches the Ishimura. Its survivors, Gabe Weller and Lexine Murdoch, come back in Dead Space 2: Severed.
What happens to Nathan McNeill at the end of Extraction?
He loses his right hand shutting down the Ishimura's defence cannons and makes it back to the escape shuttle badly hurt. The game never says outright what happens next. The final shot shows a Necromorph lunging at Lexine in the cockpit, and it's usually read as Nathan, dead from his wounds and turned. Dead Space 2: Severed backs that up, since only Gabe and Lexine made it to Titan.
Why is Lexine immune to the Marker?
The game never explains it. It only shows that the hallucinations stop when she's near, which is why the Unitologist Warren Eckhardt wanted to take her to the Church. Neither the Church nor EarthGov ever finds out why.
Was Warren Eckhardt a Unitologist?
Yes. He was a senior CEC executive and secretly an Overseer in the Church of Unitology, sent to find someone who could resist the Marker. He shot Gabe Weller when Gabe found out, and was killed by a Leaper moments later.
Does Isaac Clarke appear in Dead Space: Extraction?
No. The survivors hear the Kellion hailing the Ishimura as they escape, but they can't warn it off. Isaac's story starts after Extraction ends.
