By Joe Garratt

Yvette Hagal-Corrino was a Padishah Empress of House Corrino, born on the planet Hagal as a member of House Hagal. As the second wife of Emperor Elrood Corrino IX, she bound her House to the Imperial throne, and through her descendants her line reached down to Paul Atreides.

Marriage to Elrood IX#

The 80th Padishah Emperor, Elrood Corrino IX, had first married Barbara Mutelli, a woman two years his senior, in 10019 AG, the year after his coronation. That marriage lasted seven years until Barbara's death in 10026 AG, leaving behind their daughter Wensicia Mutelli, who, having been born out of wedlock, was neither a royal princess nor an heir. Yvette was two years old at the time.

Elrood remained unmarried for the following decade. In 10036 AG, when Yvette was twelve, she was called to Kaitain and became the Emperor's second wife. The union solidified the alliance between House Hagal and House Corrino. Yvette held a singular distinction at the Imperial court: she was the only person, including Elrood's three other wives, permitted to sit upon a throne of her own beside her husband's Golden Lion Throne, at the center of the top platform of the Imperial audience chamber known as the Selamik.

Children and descendants#

Yvette bore Elrood three daughters, Princess Crystane Corrino, Princess Tara Corrino, and Princess Edwina Corrino, the youngest of whom was born in 10070 AG. In 10090 AG, Edwina married Count Ilban Richese and took the name Edwina Richese. Her line continued through Helena Richese, who in turn bore Leto Atreides I, the father of Paul. By this descent Yvette was the great-grandmother of Paul Atreides.

Death and legacy#

The Padishah Empress died in 10075 AG, when her daughter Edwina was five years old. The birth dates of Crystane and Tara are unrecorded, so their ages at the time of their mother's death are unknown, though their placement on the Corrino birth chart suggests they were the elder sisters. The privilege of a throne beside the Golden Lion Throne that Yvette had enjoyed was echoed generations later, when her stepson Shaddam Corrino IV grudgingly permitted his wife, Lady Anirul, a similar honor, though seated on a step well below his own throne.
