Leto Atreides I (10140 A.G. to March 10191 A.G.) was the twentieth and penultimate Duke of House Atreides and the father of Emperor Paul Atreides. A direct descendant of the Old Earth monarch King Agamemnon, he ruled the ocean world of Caladan and later the desert fief of Arrakis while locked in the ancient feud with the Baron Vladimir of House Harkonnen. Celebrated for his even-handed and compassionate rule, he was known as the Red Duke and affectionately called Leto the Just.

Rule on Caladan#

A direct descendant of King Agamemnon, Leto managed the reins of Caladan and kept his military well-trained and battle-hardened despite the softness of his verdant home and its content, prosperous society, knowing he could not afford weakness with the Harkonnens as enemies. A model of strong but fair governance, he became a prominent player in the Landsraad. That standing troubled the Padishah Emperor, and the fact that Atreides military power began to rival the Imperial Sardaukar only strained Leto's goodwill with the Corrino monarch. His most capable advisors and generals were the mentat Thufir Hawat, the Swordmaster Duncan Idaho, and the Warmaster Gurney Halleck.

For nearly two decades Leto ruled alongside the Lady Jessica, the Bene Gesserit concubine the Sisterhood had bought him for her clerical skills. Though their union had been arranged, Leto came to love her genuinely. Jessica's own love for the Duke ran so deep that she disobeyed the Sisterhood's order to bear him a daughter and instead gave him the son he wanted, Paul. This unsanctioned male heir disrupted the breeding program so severely that "the Jessica Crime" became a lasting warning within the Bene Gesserit.

The fief of Arrakis#

After almost twenty years on Caladan, Leto was ordered by the Emperor to take over the planetary fief of Arrakis from House Harkonnen and move his House to the desert world. Arrakis was notoriously difficult to govern, but as the sole source of the spice melange it was immensely important, and the role carried both jeopardy and the jealousy of the other Great Houses. Leto seized the chance to increase his standing in the Landsraad even though he knew it would place his House in great peril, and he committed all his resources to the venture. To make the point to his people and to the people of Arrakis, it was said that upon his arrival he planted a flag on the battlements at Arrakeen and proclaimed, "Here I am, here I remain."

The Emperor's accompanying letter, addressed to his "Noble Duke," promised House Corrino's full support to uphold the rule of the Faufreluches. The gesture was duplicity: at the same time Shaddam IV was plotting Leto's destruction. During consolidation of his rule Leto made a swift and positive impression on Arrakeen society, winning supporters among the Fremen and the Houses Minor. Yet only a short while into his rule the Emperor gave Baron Vladimir Harkonnen approval to invade and destroy House Atreides, lending some of his own Sardaukar in support. The Emperor's urgency was sharpened by his knowledge that Leto had built a small force capable of rivaling the Sardaukar.

Betrayal and death#

During the Siege of Arrakeen, Leto was betrayed by his private Suk doctor, Wellington Yueh, and handed over to the Harkonnens. Yueh had given the Duke a chance to kill the Baron with poisonous gas released from a false tooth, but the scheme failed; the Baron survived, while his twisted mentat Piter de Vries was killed by the poison. Leto died in the attempt.

Some years later Paul recovered his father's remains from a funeral pyre in Arrakeen and laid them to rest in the Skull Tomb in the desert of Arrakis. Leto's death also left a hidden legacy: a daughter, Alia, conceived before his fall and discovered by Jessica only afterward.

Legacy#

In some measure Leto lived on in his son Paul and his grandson Leto II through their possession of Other Memory, and it was partly Leto's love for Duncan Idaho that led Leto II to maintain a succession of Idaho gholas throughout his long reign. During the reigns of both Paul and Leto II, millions made pilgrimage to Leto I's shrine as Atreides ancestry took on a religious mystique. Leto came to symbolize the virtues attributed to the Atreides bloodline: courage, integrity, loyalty, justice, and honor. Had he survived his rule on Arrakis, it was held that he would have commanded the same fanatical devotion the Fremen later gave his son. He was a tall man with olive skin and dark hair, a narrow face full of angles, a high-bridged aquiline nose that gave him the look of a hawk, and woodsmoke in his gray eyes.
