By Joe Garratt

Gurney Halleck, born in the 10130s A.G., was the Warmaster for House Atreides during the reign of Duke Leto Atreides I and later his son Paul. Along with Thufir Hawat and Duncan Idaho, he was one of Paul's principal teachers during the early years on Caladan. A ruthless yet noble and romantic warrior of enormous talent, called Gurney the Valorous, he bore a deep hatred of House Harkonnen and was reckoned the most loyal of friends and among the most terrifying of enemies.

A warrior and minstrel#

Halleck found service with House Atreides on Caladan during the rule of Duke Leto, who had rescued him from the Harkonnen slave pits on Giedi Prime. After the murder of his sister in a military pleasure house, Gurney held a deep hatred for the Harkonnens, especially Glossu Rabban, who was responsible for the inkvine scar along his jaw. He rose to become Warmaster and a loyal friend to Leto and the Lady Jessica. When Leto and Jessica had their son Paul, Halleck served as one of his instructors in shielded melee combat. Paul named him Gurney the Valorous after a lecture by Reverend Mother Mohiam on the things that support a world: the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the righteous, and the valor of the brave.

He was described as an ugly lump of a man with brawny arms, wispy blond hair over a lumpy face, glass-splinter eyes, and a beet-colored inkvine scar along his jaw. A traditionalist and purist who avoided the spice when he could, he was also a talented minstrel skilled with the baliset, and he could recite a fitting verse of the Orange Catholic Bible for nearly any situation. His fighting was second to none with sword or knife, and few opponents lasted more than a moment against him, even battle-hardened Sardaukar. As Duncan Idaho said of him, he could be killing you while he sang and never miss a note.

The fall of House Atreides#

Halleck accompanied the Duke and his family to Arrakis to take over spice production, not knowing a traitor was among them. Unlike Duncan Idaho and other Atreides lieutenants, he survived the Harkonnen and Sardaukar ambush. After the fall he fell in with spice smugglers and grew into a powerful figure on the planet.

About two years after the fall of Duke Leto, Halleck and his fellow smugglers fell for a Fremen trap, a fake hoard of spice, and were nearly slaughtered before Paul, now a Fremen leader and prophet, recognized him and ordered his Fedaykin to stand down. On returning to Sietch Tabr, Halleck nearly murdered Lady Jessica at knifepoint, still believing she was the Harkonnen spy who had betrayed the House. Paul and his mother convinced him otherwise, to his mortified regret. In 10193 A.G. he took part in the Battle of Arrakeen, where Paul's Fremen crushed the enemy and overthrew the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, and Halleck was granted great rewards as a loyal Atreides lieutenant.

In the service of Jessica and Leto II#

During Paul's reign as Emperor, it was said that Gurney Halleck became the lover of Lady Jessica, though the two kept the relationship out of public view to avoid scandal, and he spent the remainder of his days assisting her in her rule of Caladan. Granted power over his former homeworld of Giedi Prime, he was instrumental in reforming its draconian government and polluted ecology.

After Paul's exile, in 10219 A.G., Jessica sent Halleck to infiltrate Sietch Jacurutu, where her grandson Leto II was held. On Gurney's suggestion Leto was made to undergo the spice trance to test his resistance to Abomination; Leto escaped, and the two later reunited in the struggle against the tyranny of Paul's possessed sister Alia. He was present when the Preacher revealed himself as Paul before his death in Arrakeen. Halleck likely spent the rest of his days serving Leto II as emperor, and it was he who changed the name of Giedi Prime to Gammu.
