By Joe Garratt

The Preacher was the name given to a mysterious blind prophet who appeared on Arrakis during the Imperial regency of Alia Atreides. Guided by a young boy and given to railing against both the Atreides Empire and the environmental changes overtaking the planet, he was in truth Paul Atreides, returned from the desert into which he had walked, and he died denouncing the regime built upon his own legend.

The blind prophet#

During the regency of Alia Atreides, a blind prophet appeared on Arrakis, known only as the Preacher. He was guided by a young boy named Assan Tariq, and he came again and again to Arrakeen to rail against the Atreides Empire and against the environmental changes being worked upon the desert world. His oratory drew a wide range of reactions from the people of the city, awe and reverence from some, anger and ridicule from others.

His message#

The Preacher's message was rooted in the reality of his day. Muad'Dib was worshiped blindly by the common folk as the messiah of Arrakis, and the parasitic Qizarate priesthood took full advantage of that worship. The Preacher sought to wake his people to their own ignorance, calling them idolaters who had worshiped a man as a god and who submitted blindly to power-hungry fools. He warned that the very messiah myth they clung to had been planted on Arrakis long before by the Bene Gesserit through their Missionaria Protectiva. He told a bewildered audience that they fooled themselves with images they could not understand and crippled themselves with ritual and ceremony.

Revelation and death#

After meeting with Leto Atreides II in the deep desert, the Preacher revealed himself to be Paul Atreides. When Paul had walked into the desert to die, shortly after the birth of his children and the death of his concubine Chani, he had instead been captured by a sietch of rogue Fremen known as Jacurutu. He survived, blind, to return as the Preacher and to speak against the empire that had grown from his name.

He was assassinated in the main square of Arrakeen by Alia's guards after he denounced her as a blasphemer. Only after the reign that followed did humanity come to grasp how far it had been turned aside from its own enlightenment by the long interplay of Bene Gesserit interests, Guild intrigues, and the petty feuds of the Houses.
