Bene Gesserit
the Sisterhood
The Bene Gesserit were an ancient order of women who wielded power from the shadows of the Imperium through a millennia-long breeding program, mastery of body and mind, and the religious engineering of the Missionaria Protectiva. Their goal was the Kwisatz Haderach, and through him the guidance of humanity.
The Bene Gesserit, often shortened to the Sisterhood, were an ancient and adept order of women who privately denied being a religious order yet operated behind an almost impenetrable screen of ritual mysticism. Spies, scientists, theologians, and breeders, they pursued their aims through genetic experimentation, political interference within the Great Houses, and the religious engineering of the Missionaria Protectiva. For most of recorded imperial history their power was exercised quietly, in service of a single distant goal: the birth of the Kwisatz Haderach, the chosen one through whom they intended to guide the ascent of humanity.
Origins#
The origins of the Bene Gesserit were not widely known, even to those who studied the order. According to the Other Memory carried by its Reverend Mothers, the Sisterhood descended from the Priestesses of Jowf, possibly in ancient Mesopotamia on Old Earth. What was clear was that the order arose in the political turmoil that followed the Butlerian Jihad and quickly established itself as an influential force. Drawing together the sorceresses who had existed before the Jihad, and encouraging the leaders of the great religions to meet and share their views in the aftermath of the war, the embryonic Sisterhood had built its hierarchical structure by the time of the Battle of Corrin, some twenty years after the Jihad ended.
The Other Memory available to Reverend Mothers reached far back into humanity's past, to the days when humans were still bound to Earth. Certain physical remnants, among them a surviving painting by Van Gogh, served as anchor points to that distant past and reinforced the order's sense of its own deep lineage.
Emergence as a power#
For millennia the Sisterhood chose to wield its power from the background of imperial politics rather than from any throne. It worked through its breeding program, through the placement of agents in the imperial court and the Great Houses, and through the services it offered: the training of noble daughters, mediation in disputes, and the overseeing of negotiations. Through these means the Bene Gesserit carved a significant niche into the structure of the Imperium. They were also silent partners in CHOAM, alongside the Bene Tleilax.
This careful arrangement was upset when House Atreides wrested the imperial throne from House Corrino. After the reign of Paul Atreides and his son Leto Atreides II, a power vacuum opened that both the Bene Gesserit and the Bene Tleilax moved to fill, each seeking to hold the remnants of the empire together after humanity burst across the cosmos in the Scattering. The Sisterhood came to believe that, to avoid falling under another tyrant, it would have to take a far more active role in events than it had ever risked before.
The breeding program and the Kwisatz Haderach#
The primary objective of the Bene Gesserit was to attain power and influence and to direct humanity along a path of insight and stability. Until the emergence of Leto Atreides II, the anticipated means to that end was the Kwisatz Haderach, a male Bene Gesserit who could be all places at once, a being able to bridge space and time. He was the intended culmination of the order's age-old breeding program. The plan called for the daughter of Leto Atreides I to be bred with Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, a union that would have ended the long feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen and placed a prescient, Bene Gesserit-controlled male on the Golden Lion Throne.
Those plans were thrown into turmoil when Jessica Atreides consciously gave Duke Leto a son, Paul, instead of the daughter the Sisterhood required. Paul was taken to be the Kwisatz Haderach, but he arrived a generation too soon and beyond the order's control. His subsequent breeding with Chani, the Fremen daughter of Liet-Kynes, stirred up rogue and unpredictable genetic traits, and the actions of their son Leto Atreides II as God-Emperor radically altered the long-term destiny of the Sisterhood. Their primary goal thereafter became the re-establishment of their power base.
Structure#
Women ruled the Bene Gesserit without question. Men maintained some important roles but were always answerable to at least one woman, and ultimately to the Reverend Mother Superior, who held control of the entire order and commanded near-absolute loyalty from the subordinate Reverend Mothers beneath her. A Reverend Mother Superior chose her successor before her death and imparted to her both memory and personality, though at times that inheritance was deliberately divided among several Reverend Mothers for strategic reasons.
The subordinate ranks filled diverse roles. Reverend Mothers, who had undergone the Spice Agony and survived, served as advisors, faculty, historians, and geneticists, and held general authority over most members and the wider populace. Proctor Superiors each commanded a chapter house. Truthsayers were taught to invoke the truth trance. Sisters served as agents, concubines, and potential wives, while Acolytes were trainees and assistants. Some roles carried Hidden Noble Rank, never acknowledged outside the senior ranks; Anirul Corrino and her daughter Irulan Corrino were two who held such standing.
Powers and abilities#
Bene Gesserit training was designed to maximize the physical and mental potential of the human being, and its adepts possessed abilities that could not be rivaled across the known universe. Physically, a Bene Gesserit could command every muscle and nerve down to the individual fiber, a mastery rooted in the disciplines of prana and bindu. Through Internal Organic-Chemical Control she could neutralize poisons by altering their chemistry within her body, a control refined enough to survive the Water of Life and even to slow her own aging, though she would never do the latter for fear of drawing attention to the order. The same prana-bindu discipline let her control blood flow, body temperature, and heart rate, appear dead to most tests, or end her own life at will. Oral Analysis allowed her to break a tasted substance down to its chemical components, and Fertility Control let her choose when to conceive and the sex of her child, serving the breeding program directly.
Among the most feared of these powers was the Voice, the ability to command a person through precise tones that made refusal nearly impossible, though a population subjected to it too often could grow immune, and a Mentat who understood its workings could resist it. Truthsense let Truthsayers and other sisters detect deception, as when Jessica sensed that Doctor Yueh was concealing something even as he manipulated his own emotions to mask his coming betrayal. Petit Perception allowed a sister to read concealed motives, weapons, surgery, or disguise from the smallest of cues, a skill especially useful in detecting Face Dancers. In combat, the Weirding Way made Bene Gesserit fighters all but unmatched, approached only by the Imperial Sardaukar and the Fremen of Arrakis.
The war of the sisterhoods#
The Sisterhood's drive to re-establish itself was severely tested by the emergence of the Honored Matres, a bastardization of Bene Gesserit and Fish Speaker traditions that returned out of the Scattering and began attacking the planets of the Old Imperium. The Bene Gesserit found themselves cast as champions of the Old Order, in open conflict with both the Matres and the Bene Tleilax. The Reverend Mother Superior Darwi Odrade, herself a descendant of Paul, came to believe that only by combining with the Honored Matres could either organization survive. She first trained the captured Matre Murbella in the ways of the sisters, then set in motion a plan, alongside a ghola of Miles Teg, to assault the Honored Matre base on the Guild-world of Junction. Odrade was killed in the ensuing battle, but Murbella slew the Matre leader Logno and resolved to unite both groups into the New Sisterhood.
Resistance to the merger was immediate. Sheeana, a rebel Reverend Mother, escaped from Chapterhouse aboard a no-ship with a hundred fellow sisters and a few sandworms, taking with her Miles Teg and a ghola of Duncan Idaho, who had their own reasons for leaving. Sheeana intended to found a pure Gesserit outpost far from civilization. As the no-ship fold-spaced across the cosmos to evade the tachyon net of the mysterious elderly couple known only as Daniel and Marty, the sisters aboard held true to their training and their structure, carrying the order's discipline into the unknown.
