Chapterhouse
the last refuge of the Bene Gesserit
Chapterhouse was the Bene Gesserit term for the planet that served as the Sisterhood's home base. In its final form it was a hidden, deliberately unsettled world shielded from prescient eyes and, in the end, remade into desert to shelter the last sandworm.
Chapterhouse was the term the Bene Gesserit used for whichever planet served as the Sisterhood's home base, a designation that moved from world to world across the centuries. In its final form Chapterhouse was a hidden refuge, never quite fully settled, that the order shielded from prescient searchers and, after the loss of Rakis, turned to desert so that the last sandworm and the supply of spice might survive.
A shifting designation#
Chapterhouse was not a fixed place but a term the Bene Gesserit applied to whichever planet they considered their home base, and the world it referred to changed over the centuries of the order's existence. Speculation placed the original Bene Gesserit home base on the planet Rossak. Each Chapterhouse was treated as a temporary base, never quite fully settled, so that if the need arose the Sisterhood could abandon the planet on short notice and leave little trace of their stay. The final Chapterhouse nonetheless remained on the same world for more than 1,500 years, which made the word "temporary" a loose term.
The hidden headquarters#
The final Chapterhouse served as the secret headquarters of the Bene Gesserit from approximately the time of Leto II's death onward. To mask its existence from prescient individuals who might search for the Sisterhood's seat, the order ringed the planet with No-ships in a defensive, encapsulating perimeter. Among the threats this concealment was meant to guard against were the Honored Matres, the violent power returning from the Scattering.
Remaking the world for the worm#
Chapterhouse lay largely within an average photosynthesis range, a balance maintained through weather satellites. After the planet Rakis was destroyed by the Honored Matres, however, the Bene Gesserit turned much of Chapterhouse into desert so that the last surviving sandworm could live there. The aim was to keep the spice melange in production, a concern made all the more urgent because the Bene Tleilax, the largest producers of melange, had likewise been destroyed by the Honored Matres.
Library and settlements#
Chapterhouse was also the site of the Bene Gesserit's main library. Because the loss of the Sisterhood's records would have been too great a risk to entrust to any single archive, the majority of the order's knowledge was instead carried through Other Memory. The settlements of Chapterhouse included Central, where the Chapterhouse Keep stood, along with Pondrille and Eldio.
