By Joe Garratt

Janess Idaho was the second eldest daughter of the final ghola of Duncan Idaho and the Honored Matres leader Murbella. She was the twin of Rinya Idaho, born minutes before her sister. Raised within the Bene Gesserit on Chapterhouse, she became a Reverend Mother and a Swordmaster of Ginaz, rising to command the Valkyries and ultimately to Supreme Bashar of all the New Sisterhood's military forces during the final war against the Thinking Machines.

Youth on Chapterhouse#

Janess was conceived and born while Murbella and Idaho were held captive aboard a no-ship prison on the Bene Gesserit capital world of Chapterhouse. At birth she was taken from her parents to be raised within the Sisterhood. Unlike many Gesserit children, Janess was aware of her parentage and was allowed to reflect on it and even to visit her mother.

As the Return of the Honored Matres unfolded and the time of Kralizec began, Idaho, Sheeana, and the rest of the no-ship crew and captives escaped Chapterhouse aboard the vessel, now christened the Ithaca, folding space into another universe to flee the unknown Enemy. Idaho would be lost for more than twenty-six years, separated from a daughter he did not know he had, while Janess grew up fully informed of her father and his legacy.

Commander of the Valkyries#

Murbella became leader of the combined Honored Matres and Bene Gesserit, the New Sisterhood, and after Janess became a Reverend Mother she appointed her daughter commander of the para-military Valkyries. Janess continued her training as a Swordmaster of Ginaz, as her father had been, while honing the Valkyries into an effective force.

At Murbella's order, Janess and her chief aide Kiria set out to destroy the rebel Honored Matres factions across the galaxies. They first eliminated the rebels on Chapterhouse itself, then swiftly took Gammu, killing many Matres leaders in person. As a final test, Janess led the assault on the last rebel stronghold on Tleilax, where the Matre Superior Hellica was surrounded in Bandalong by ground forces under Janess and Kiria and air forces under Bashar Wikki Aztin. As Murbella joined her daughter to kill Hellica herself, the Matre Superior revealed herself to be an Enhanced Face Dancer before their eyes.

Supreme Bashar in the war against the Machines#

After the fall of the last rebel stronghold and the loss of Wikki Aztin, Janess was promoted to Supreme Bashar of all the Sisterhood's forces as the onslaught of the Thinking Machines began. As her mother worked to unite all of humanity against the Machines in an organized manner, Janess served as her invaluable counsel. She supported Murbella's journey into the Scattering to witness the devastation of the Omnius Scourge, and as the plague and machine armada struck the worlds of the Old Imperium, Janess was on the front line, tending the sick and the dying. She traveled throughout the Old Imperium urging the fragmented branches of humanity to unite, and dispersed her mother's newly built starships and Obliterator weapons among the worlds.

The Day of Kralizec#

As the Day of Kralizec began, Murbella placed Janess in a separate ship within the armada above Chapterhouse. It was Janess who first discovered that the ships and weapons produced by the foundry star-ship yards of Ix had been sabotaged, with a vast majority malfunctioning when humanity fired upon the Machines. The battle turned when the Oracle of Time appeared with hundreds of Guild Heighliners and destroyed the first wave of machine ships, after which the remaining Machine vessels simply ceased functioning and drifted over Chapterhouse. Janess watched in astonishment as her mother's ship was carried away by the Oracle's Navigators, and hours later Murbella returned with Janess's father, Duncan Idaho, revealed as the Ultimate Kwisatz Haderach. With the war between man and machine ended and her father alive, Janess was filled with joy at the prospect that humanity and machine would henceforth live in harmony.
