Swordmasters of Ginaz

martial order of the Ginaz School

The Swordmasters of Ginaz were warriors who earned the title by attaining a high level of skill at the Ginaz School. Regarded as superior to Sardaukar, they served the Great Houses as commanders, teachers, and personal guards.

By Joe Garratt

Swordmaster was a title awarded to warriors who attained a certain level of skill at the Ginaz School during the era of the Faufreluches. Trained on the homeworld of House Ginaz, the Swordmasters of Ginaz were regarded as superior warriors in every way, held to be more capable even than the Imperial Sardaukar.

The title and its bearers#

The title of Swordmaster was conferred on those who reached the required level of skill at the Ginaz School. Conceivably, many Great Houses maintained their own Swordmasters, who served as commanders, teachers, and personal guards for the members of the noble family. A Swordmaster was therefore both a fighting man and a fixture of a House's military leadership and education.

Duncan Idaho was the Swordmaster for House Atreides. It was partly through his instruction that the Atreides were able to train a small army that rivaled the Sardaukar in ability in the year 10191 AG.

The blade arts of Ginaz#

The name Swordmaster reflected the fact that its adepts were highly skilled in bladed weapons, namely knives and swords, as well as in hand-to-hand combat. These close-quarters disciplines re-entered human warfare after shielding systems made the use of guns futile, since a fast-moving projectile could not penetrate a defensive shield. The slow, deliberate blade became the decisive weapon of personal combat, and the Swordmasters of Ginaz were its acknowledged masters.

Known Swordmasters#

The roster of the Ginaz tradition included teachers attached to the school such as Whitmore Bludd, Rivvy Dinari, Jeh-Wu, Jamo Reed, Karsty Topper, Jool Noret, and Mord Cour. Among the warriors counted in its ranks were Zon Noret, Istian Goss, and Nar Trig.

Some Swordmasters carried the discipline of the school into service offworld. Keiran Atreides and Duncan Idaho served House Atreides, while Hiih Resser served House Moritani. Trin Kronos, also of House Moritani, was recorded among those who failed to earn the title.
