Suk School

the Imperium medical school and its Inner Conditioning

The Suk Medical School trained the most trusted physicians of the Imperium. Its Imperial Conditioning was believed to make a Suk doctor incapable of taking a human life, marked by a diamond tattoo and a silver hair ring.

By Joe Garratt

The Suk Medical School, also known as the Suk Inner School, was a place of learning that specialized in medicine and was devoted to curing the ailments that plagued humanity and to advancing medical knowledge. Widely held superior to any other medical group, the Suk doctors were counted among the best in fields ranging as far as cybernetics, and their conditioning made them the most trusted physicians of the noble Houses.

Founding and reputation#

The school was founded by Mohandas Suk after the Rossak Epidemic in 88 BG. It was claimed that its graduates, like Mentats or the Swordmasters of Ginaz, were the best in the Imperium. Suk doctors were thought to have been mentally conditioned in such a way that they could never take a human life. In an age rife with kanly, the formal vendetta of the Great Houses, this was a thing of very great value to any noble who needed a physician he could trust.

The Imperial Conditioning#

The mark of a fully conditioned Suk doctor was visible at a glance. Each bore a diamond tattoo on the forehead as the sign of the Imperial Conditioning, and a silver ring binding the long hair worn by members of the school. The Conditioning was the school's guarantee to the Houses that the physician placed in their household could not turn his skills to murder, however great the pressure or the temptation.

Practice across the Imperium#

It was never certain whether the school trained its doctors on a single planet. As late as the War of the Bene Gesserit and the Honored Matres, Suk doctors were known to work alongside others, notably the Bene Gesserit. A Suk physician need not be recruited directly from the school's home or association; the doctor Wellington Yueh was serving House Richese when his services were hired by House Harkonnen and then by House Atreides. Wherever they served, Suk doctors remitted part of their expensive fees back to the Suk School.

Notable physicians#

Among the recorded members of the school were its founder Mohandas Suk and the doctor Rajid Suk, along with Elas Yungar, Solitz, Jalanto, and the physician known as the Rabbi. The most infamous of all was Wellington Yueh, placed in the household of Duke Leto Atreides on Arrakis. His betrayal of the Atreides became the proof that the Imperial Conditioning, long believed unbreakable, could in fact be broken.
