Field Marshal Jafa Muzzafar was the regional commander of the Forces of Dur, a world that lay beyond the Known Universe. One of the Lost Ones returned from the Scattering, he was aligned with the Honored Matres and tasked with detaining the Mentat Bashar Miles Teg on Gammu after Teg's escape from captivity, holding him until the Honored Matres could take him.
Origins on Dur#
Jafa Muzzafar lived on Dur before the return of the Lost Ones from the Scattering. There he trained a Frame bush, a semi-sentient plant capable of transforming into architectural structures, keeping the first one he could find rather than seeking a better specimen, which his peers found amusing. He later entered the military and rose to the rank of Field Marshal, an ancient title on Dur, eventually becoming Regional Commander of the Forces of Dur. He was a tall man with a deep baritone voice and an accent that marked him as one of those returned from the Scattering.
Meeting Miles Teg#
Muzzafar met Miles Teg in the city of Ysai on Gammu, following Teg's escape from his captors. He introduced himself, condemned the treatment Teg had suffered as nasty, and claimed no part in it. The two seated themselves at a dining table, and Muzzafar urged Teg to wait before eating until his Suk doctor, Solitz, had examined him. Solitz scanned Teg, judged him remarkably fit for his age but in need of sustenance, ordered a suitable meal, and departed.
When Teg asked why Solitz had addressed his host as Field Marshal, Muzzafar explained that it was an ancient title on Dur, and used a holostat to show Teg the planet and tell him of his Frame bush. The meal arrived, and Teg, suspecting poison, used his new powers to confirm it was safe before eating an enormous amount, which Muzzafar noted he had never seen matched in a single sitting. As Teg rose to leave, Muzzafar stopped him, insisting that quarters had been prepared and that it was safer not to move. Teg sensed a change in his host and deduced he carried an implanted communicator. Muzzafar did not deny it, warning that an attack on Gammu by Teg's allies would be ill-advised, and that Teg had no concept of what was about to happen before wishing him well and leaving.
Enslavement and death#
Muzzafar took Teg by groundcar to a former bank to meet the arriving Honored Matre, the most powerful ever to visit Gammu. At the door he warned Teg that she expected complete obedience and was to be addressed only as Honored Matre, then provided him a Bashar-like uniform and ushered him inside. Muzzafar was present when she entered and obeyed her order to withdraw. When he returned he was visibly altered, queasy and seemingly drugged. The Honored Matre revealed that they had used their sexual enslavement techniques on him, and the now wholly subservient Muzzafar confirmed in a hoarse voice that he had thanked her. She ordered him to bring in the Honored Matre who would imprint on Teg.
As Muzzafar left, Teg foresaw the immediate future in which he would unleash his powers and kill everyone in the building. Teg then surrendered to those powers and became the whirlwind, moving at a speed far beyond natural human reaction. He killed everyone in the Honored Matre complex, Muzzafar among them.
