Dune Characters: Every Major Character in Frank Herbert's Novels
The major characters of Frank Herbert's six Dune novels, grouped by house and faction, from Paul Atreides and the Harkonnens to the God Emperor and the Bene Gesserit of the later books. A short labelled section at the end covers the key figures of the expanded books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.
Frank Herbert's Dune novels follow one family, the Atreides, across more than five thousand years, so the cast changes almost completely from book to book. The first novel has the biggest and best-known set of characters, from Paul Atreides to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. The later books add Paul's children, the God Emperor's court and the Bene Gesserit of the far future, with Duncan Idaho as the one face that keeps coming back. This guide groups them by house and faction in rough story order. For the plot of the first book, see Dune ending explained. Full spoilers for all six novels. (Dune; Dune Messiah; God Emperor of Dune; Chapterhouse: Dune)
House Atreides#
Paul Atreides#

After his father's death he and his mother flee into the desert, where the Fremen take them in and Paul becomes their prophet and war leader, Muad'Dib. He drinks the Water of Life, wakes as the Kwisatz Haderach, and takes the throne, knowing he cannot stop the jihad fought in his name. Blinded in Dune Messiah, he walks into the desert, and returns as the Preacher in Children of Dune before he is killed in Arrakeen. (Dune; Dune Messiah; Children of Dune)
