Norma Cenva

the first Navigator and Oracle of Time

Norma Cenva was a mathematical genius of the Butlerian Jihad who designed the first foldspace ship, became the first Guild Navigator, and co-founded the Spacing Guild. She ultimately evolved into the disembodied Oracle of Time.

By Joe Garratt

Norma Cenva was one of the most consequential figures in human history, a mathematical genius of the Butlerian Jihad who designed the first foldspace ship, became the first Navigator, and co-founded the Spacing Guild. Born on Rossak in 218 BG and long dismissed as a malformed failure, she rose through her own brilliance to transform space travel itself, eventually evolving into the disembodied consciousness known as the Oracle of Time. In the final age she returned to confront the reborn Omnius, banishing the evermind from the universe at the battle of Kralizec.

Early life on Rossak#

Norma Cenva was considered a failure by her mother, the Supreme Sorceress Zufa Cenva, because she was born a malformed dwarf, a condition attributed to the strange chemicals of Rossak that also made the Sorceresses so powerful. Shunned and pitied, Norma found her only true friend in her adoptive father Aurelius Venport, who shared her fascination with science and mathematics. It was Venport who arranged for her to become an assistant to the famous Poritrin scientist Tio Holtzman.

Inventor on Poritrin#

Recognizing her potential from a paper Venport sent him, Holtzman invited Norma to Poritrin in 203 BG, though he required her to sign away ownership of all her inventions. There she developed the portable scrambler generator that disrupted the gel circuitry of thinking machines, which she regarded as her contribution to the war effort, and used the Holtzman effect to invent the suspensor field, which combined with glow strips to become the glowglobe used throughout the Known Universe. Holtzman took credit for much of her work, and after Venport began selling the glowglobe, Lord Niko Bludd and Holtzman effectively disowned her. Working independently thereafter, Norma turned to the problem of folding space, building the first spacefolder prototype, which Bludd promptly seized from her.

Transformation and the first Navigator#

While on a spaceflight, Norma was captured and tortured for hours by the Titan Xerxes. The ordeal triggered latent mental powers and fused her soostone pendant into her body, giving her the ability to control her own molecular structure and the beginnings of prescience. She killed Xerxes and his watching neo-cymeks with a thought, reached into her maternal bloodline's distant past, and reshaped her dwarfish body into one of great beauty. She summoned her mother to Kolhar, where Zufa, repenting of her abandonment, joined Norma and Venport in building the first great shipyard for Norma's Holtzman engines. Norma and Venport finally married and had five children, of whom only Adrien inherited his father's business talent.

Foldspace travel remained deadly, with one ship in ten lost when it emerged inside a sun or planet, and the Jihad's ban on the computers that had guided the early ships only worsened the danger. Consuming ever greater quantities of melange in her search for a solution, Norma had an epiphany: carefully screened and trained humans, fully immersed in spice, could fold space safely. The transformation reverted her body to its dwarfish form with an enlarged head, a change she chose not to undo, and she sealed herself in an airtight chamber breathing melange gas. As the first Navigator she learned to fold space with her mind alone, demonstrating the feat by transporting her chamber from Kolhar to the Emperor's dining room on Salusa Secundus.

The Spacing Guild and the Oracle#

Decades later, as her great-great-grandson Josef Venport led the company that had grown into Venport Holdings, Norma's visions and guidance secretly shaped the creation of the Spacing Guild. During the galactic civil war she negotiated with Emperor Roderick Corrino at the Battle of Denali to spare all Navigators in exchange for withdrawing the company's ships, and tricked him into sparing Josef as well. The Independent Spacing Guild was formed with her help in 1 AG. Sealed in her spice chamber, her body continued to dissolve until she existed only as a disembodied consciousness, the Oracle of Infinity, the guiding patron of the Navigators.

The Oracle of Time and Kralizec#

Thousands of years later, as the thinking machines rose again, Norma was known among the Guild as the Oracle of Time. Sensing that the ultimate Kwisatz Haderach was aboard the no-ship Ithaca, she tried to protect humanity and the Navigators against the reborn Omnius. When the machine-led Enhanced Face Dancers fractured the Guild from within, she summoned the Navigators and their heighliners to the battlefront over Chapterhouse and then to the skies of Synchrony. On the final day of Kralizec she appeared in the Cathedral, confirmed Paul Atreides's dying prescient announcement that Duncan Idaho was the ultimate Kwisatz Haderach, and then confronted Omnius directly, transporting both herself and the evermind into an alternate universe and ridding humanity of the thinking machine ruler forever.
