Battle of Denali
the final blow of the galactic civil war
The Battle of Denali was the last engagement of the galactic civil war, fought between Venport Holdings and the forces of Emperor Roderick Corrino over the hidden research planet of Denali. It ended Venport Holdings, destroyed the robot Erasmus, and led directly to the founding of the Spacing Guild.
The Battle of Denali was the final battle of the galactic civil war, fought between the commercial empire of Josef Venport and the forces of Emperor Roderick Corrino in orbit and on the surface of the planet Denali. By the time it was joined, the fanatical Butlerian movement was no longer a threat, and the battle represented the decisive blow dealt by the Emperor to his last great rival. It ended with the destruction of the robot Erasmus, the fall of Venport Holdings, and the founding of the Spacing Guild.
Background#
After the three-way Battle of Lampadas left both the Butlerian movement and Venport Holdings severely weakened, Emperor Roderick Corrino discovered that his sister Anna had been held hostage by Josef Venport at Denali, and Admiral Umberto Harte's people learned the location of Venport's hidden research facility. The Emperor assembled a sizable force and retained two large spacefolders to carry the fleet to Denali.
Venport, meanwhile, was working to strengthen the planet's defenses and repair his remaining ships. The independent robot Erasmus, whose gelcircuitry had been implanted into the cloned body of his late pupil Gilbertus Albans, had been adapting thinking-machine technology for Denali's defense while pursuing a relationship with Anna Corrino, and he reprogrammed a number of mothballed war mechs to guard the facility.
The battle in orbit#
The Imperial fleet arrived and laid siege to the planet, and Venport warned the Emperor to stay away lest harm come to his sister. Unknown to either man, Erasmus had deeply wounded Anna by making her believe their relationship had been only an experiment to him. The mentally scarred Anna chose to end her life by walking unprotected into Denali's toxic atmosphere. Feeling unexpected remorse, Erasmus went out to rescue her but could not make it back, and both died within minutes as even the robot's gelcircuitry succumbed to the caustic air.
When Roderick learned of his sister's death, he ordered Admiral Harte to attack the defending VenHold ships and bombard the research facility. After several VenHold ships were destroyed, Norma Cenva transported herself onto the bridge of the Imperial flagship to negotiate. She agreed to withdraw all ships to Arrakis and leave Denali undefended if Roderick promised to spare all present and future Navigators, agreed to create an independent Spacing Guild, and maintained the flow of spice. As soon as he gave his word, Norma vanished from the bridge and every VenHold ship jumped away, leaving the planet exposed.
The ground assault#
Stunned by his great-grandmother's betrayal, Josef Venport could only watch as Imperial troop transports landed outside the facility. A few surviving cymeks destroyed some of them, but the heavily armed Imperial troops in sealed suits overwhelmed the defenders. The war mechs programmed by Erasmus marched out and engaged the soldiers, and after a fight lasting many hours and costing many lives the Imperial forces prevailed and entered the facility. They killed any researcher who fled or resisted and detained the rest, gunning down scientists who released experimental weapons.
Venport's Mentat Draigo Roget offered to negotiate with the Imperials to spare as many lives and as much research as possible. Knowing his own life was forfeit, Josef thanked Draigo for his service and sent him out, then locked himself in an office and contemplated suicide rather than face a public execution. Norma Cenva appeared and told him of a loophole in Roderick's promise: if Josef became a Navigator, the Emperor could not harm him. Though furious at being tricked, Roderick eventually accepted that fate for his enemy.
Aftermath#
With Denali occupied, Venport Holdings ceased to exist and its assets were confiscated by the Imperium. Draigo Roget was sent to Arrakis to manage spice harvesting. With both his great enemies defeated, Emperor Roderick declared victory in a grand speech on Salusa Secundus, where Norma Cenva announced the formation of the Spacing Guild to provide safe foldspace travel throughout the Imperium.
