Ornithopter

the thopter of the Imperium

The ornithopter, or thopter, was the most common small transport aircraft of the Imperium, flying by jet propulsion and by mimicking the wingbeats of birds. It carried passengers and cargo, served in war, and on Arrakis dueled with the sandworms above the spice sands.

By Joe Garratt

Ornithopters, also commonly referred to as thopters, were the most common small transport vessels in the Imperium. These aircraft could carry six passengers, or nine if the back seats were removed, and were most often operated within planetary atmospheres, though some types were capable of space travel over short distances. They saw service everywhere from civilian transport between cities and continents to military operations, and on Arrakis they were the chief means of moving above the spice sands where the sandworms ruled.

Capabilities and use#

Thopters were highly versatile. While some types could manage space travel over short distances, the small vessels were operated mostly in planetary atmospheres, where their uses ranged from carrying people between cities and continents to transporting light cargo across long distances. They were often employed for military purposes and fitted with weaponry. These weapons were usually lasguns, though a thopter could also carry small missiles and repeating maula pistols. With the exception of the planet Arrakis, and of craft built for heavier cargo, most ornithopters were equipped with shields.

Design and propulsion#

Most thopters were winged vessels capable of flight through jet propulsion as well as by mimicking the movements of birds. The jets served as the primary propulsion system, while the wings assisted in maintaining altitude and in maneuvering the vessel. The largest cargo-handling members of the family were the carryalls, which were essentially large ornithopters built to lift heavy loads, including the spice harvesting equipment used in the deserts of Arrakis.

Variants#

Ornithopters appeared in many different types, from tiny scout and unmanned drone variants to large armored models, carrier wings, and troop-carriers. Recorded among their many forms were aerial searchers, armored thopters, cargo ornithopters, command thopters, escort thopters and smaller guard ships, scout thopters, gun thopters, racing thopters, and troop-carriers, among others.
