Spice harvester

the crawler of Arrakis

The spice harvester, also called a crawler, was a vast mobile factory used on Arrakis to mine and process melange from the desert sand. Dropped onto spice fields by carryalls and watched over by spotter thopters, harvesters worked under constant threat of the sandworms drawn by their rhythmic noise.

By Joe Garratt

The spice harvester, also called a crawler, was a large, heavy, mobile factory designed to harvest melange on Arrakis. It was dropped onto the spice fields by carrier ships known as carryalls, after which it harvested and processed the spice directly from the sand of the desert floor. This immense machine was used solely on Arrakis, the only known source of spice before the Tleilaxu later developed a substitute.

Function and operation#

A harvester was operated by a crew of about twenty spice drivers, who ran the machine across the open sand while it drew up and processed the spice beneath it. Because the crawler could not move quickly on its own, it depended on a carryall to lift it onto a field and to carry it away again. Accompanying each crawler were two or three ornithopters, called spotters, that hovered overhead watching for wormsign, the unmistakable signal that a sandworm was approaching. On detecting wormsign, the spotters signaled for the harvester to be lifted and moved to safety. When Paul Atreides asked Liet-Kynes whether they would see a sandworm while viewing a harvest, Kynes answered that the worms always came when they heard a spice harvester.

The danger of the worms#

The rhythmic sound a harvester made drew sandworms with grim reliability, and a worm could grow large enough to swallow an entire crawler whole. Timing and the size of the spice load were therefore the central concerns of any harvest, and crews routinely worked a field until the last possible minute before a carryall picked them up, balancing the value of the spice against the certainty that a worm was coming.

The risk was made plain when Duke Leto Atreides travelled into the desert to inspect a harvesting operation and its equipment. The operation ended in disaster when no carryall could be located to lift the vehicle before a worm arrived and swallowed it whole. The Duke ordered the fleet of spotter ships to land and carry off the crew, valuing the lives of his workers over the lost machine and its cargo.
