Liet-Kynes

planetologist of Arrakis

Liet-Kynes was the Imperial planetologist of Arrakis, Judge of the Change, and the secret leader of the Fremen. He carried on his father's dream of greening the desert and died saving Paul and Jessica from the Harkonnens.

By Joe Garratt

Liet-Kynes, known outside the Fremen simply as Dr. Kynes, was the son of Pardot Kynes and the father of Chani. He served as the Imperial planetologist and ecologist of Arrakis, the Judge of the Change, and the secret leader of the Fremen at the time House Atreides took control of the planet in 10191 AG. Through his daughter he became grandfather to the God Emperor Leto Atreides II and his sister Ghanima.

Early life and inheritance#

Kynes was a Fremen child, the son of Pardot Kynes and a full Fremen Sandrider. When Liet turned nineteen his father died, and as Pardot had already nominated him to succeed as Imperial Planetologist the transition was painless. Liet took up the dual mantle of planetary ecologist of Arrakis and leader of the Fremen, continuing his father's vision of gradually transforming the harsh desert into a temperate world of precipitation, greenery and open water. Where Pardot had focused almost entirely on the ecological reformation of the planet and could appear tactless, Liet paid far closer attention to the Fremen themselves and was less single-minded than his father, having inherited his mother's Fremen nature alongside his father's ecological gift.

Arbiter of the Change#

Upon the arrival of House Atreides on Arrakis, Kynes acted as arbiter of the change of fief, as ordered by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. His official duty was to report to the Landsraad and the Emperor on the legality of the Atreides takeover after House Harkonnen was ordered to leave. The Atreides did not know that Liet and Dr. Kynes were the same person; to them, Liet was only a mystical figure of the desert, while Liet was in truth Kynes's secret sietch name.

Through his intelligence network, Duke Leto Atreides came to understand that Kynes also held authority among the Fremen and had, by report, "gone native." Leto resolved to show Kynes that he meant to govern honourably, recognising that winning Kynes to his side might also win over the Fremen, who had long distrusted the Faufreluches for its disregard of the native people of Arrakis.

Loyalty and death#

When House Harkonnen returned to Arrakis, Kynes was captured as an accomplice of the Atreides and the Fremen and as a witness to Harkonnen dishonour. He was abandoned in the desert without water or a stillsuit and died when heat exhaustion, dehydration and delirium left him unable to escape a massive spice blow over a pre-spice mass that had reached critical point. As he died, he heard a hallucination of his father reciting all his teachings on ecology. His act of saving Paul and Jessica from the Sardaukar and Harkonnen troops had been the loyalty that cost him his life, an illustration of how the Atreides could instil fanatical devotion through their honourable ways.

Legacy#

Kynes's line was carried on by his daughter Chani, who became the concubine of Paul, making him grandfather to the God Emperor Leto Atreides II and his twin Ghanima. His descendants continued the terraforming of Arrakis until it became a lush and fertile world. He was described as a tall, thin man with long sandy hair, a sparse and mussed moustache and beard, and, under heavy brows, eyes that were fathomless blue-within-blue.
