Ghanima Atreides

twin of the God Emperor

Ghanima Atreides was the pre-born daughter of Paul Muad'Dib and Chani, and the twin sister of the God Emperor Leto Atreides II. Married in name to her brother and consort to Farad'n Corrino, she seeded the Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino bloodlines across the Empire.

By Joe Garratt

Ghanima Atreides, born in 10210 AG, was the daughter of Emperor Paul Atreides and his Fremen concubine Chani, and the twin sister of Leto Atreides II, the God Emperor. Born a little before her brother, she was pre-born like him, coming into the world with full adult consciousness. Known also as Ghani, she would be married in name to Leto and take Farad'n Corrino, heir of House Corrino, as her consort, seeding the combined bloodlines of three Great Houses across the Empire.

Birth and upbringing#

Ghanima was born on Arrakis at Sietch Tabr, twelve years after her father's ascent to Emperor. Her mother, Paul's official concubine Chani, died of labour complications shortly after the twins' birth, so the children never knew her in person. Her father named her with the Fremen word for "spoil of war," a bitter reference to the joy she brought during a painful time. Paul's prescience had revealed her birth, but not that she would have a twin brother. With Paul gone into the desert soon after, Ghanima was raised by her aunt, the Regent Alia, and her stepmother, Princess Irulan.

Because of her genetic heritage and the great quantities of melange her mother had consumed, Ghanima was pre-born, possessing from the start a full adult consciousness, wisdom far beyond her years, and the recall of a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother across both her male and female ancestors. She lacked her brother's assertive streak and his degree of prescience. As the twins grew, their powers became more visible, and the Sisterhood feared they had been born into Abomination like Alia. The pair proved able to master the ancestral voices within them, though they sometimes played with that danger by assuming their parents' personalities as a game.

The Golden Path#

For a time Ghanima guided her brother in the formation of the Golden Path. As they neared Fremen adulthood, however, Leto began to conceal aspects of the Path from her, chiefly to protect her, knowing that her love for him might drive her to prevent its terrible course.

Ghanima became the target of an assassination plot orchestrated by the Princess Wensicia Corrino. The scheme provided the twins with a royal gift of fine cloaks fitted with transmitters that would attract Laza tigers once the children next ventured into the desert. After the attempt failed, Leto reasoned that if Ghanima believed him dead, the conspirators might reveal themselves. Ghanima therefore agreed to be conditioned into believing her brother slain, leaving him free to take the next steps of the Path alone. Fearing for her safety, Irulan placed her under Stilgar's protection, where she remained until Leto reappeared months later, transformed, and took the leadership of the Empire from the possessed Alia.

The reign of the God Emperor#

When Leto seized the throne, he controversially married his sister to consolidate House Atreides' hold on the Imperium. The marriage was never consummated; it was a political decision, meant to prevent another Great House from wedding Ghanima and contesting his power. For the sake of the Golden Path, Leto instead made Farad'n Corrino, heir of House Corrino, Ghanima's official and exclusive consort. Through this union Leto wrested control of the Bene Gesserit breeding program, and the combined Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino genes were seeded across the Empire through Ghanima and Farad'n's descendants. As Leto had planned, those descendants became countless over the following millennia and formed the genetic foundation for events such as the Scattering. Among their line was Siona Atreides, who would in time become instrumental in Leto's own designs.
