By Joe Garratt

Dune: Part Three is the third and final film in Denis Villeneuve's Dune trilogy, adapted from Frank Herbert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures release it in cinemas and IMAX across North America on 18 December 2026, with international dates starting on 16 December. This page sticks to what the studios and the trade press have confirmed, and it says plainly where the facts run out. (Dune: Part Three official site)

When does Dune: Part Three come out?#

Dune: Part Three opens on 18 December 2026 in North America, in regular cinemas and IMAX, and international releases begin on 16 December 2026. Warner Bros. distributes it worldwide, with Legendary East handling China. (Dune: Part Three official site)

The title is official. During development the trade press called the film Dune Messiah, after the novel, but in July 2025 Variety reported that it was listed as Dune: Part Three, and that some sequences would be shot with IMAX cameras, though not the whole film. Who is in the cast?#

The official billing names Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson and Javier Bardem. The character roles come from the trailer launch and the posters Warner Bros. released alongside it. (Dune: Part Three official site; Dune: Part Three trailer launch)

  • Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, now Emperor. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Zendaya returns as Chani, the Fremen warrior who left Paul at the end of Dune: Part Two. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Florence Pugh returns as Princess Irulan, Paul's wife by political marriage. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Rebecca Ferguson returns as Lady Jessica, Paul's mother. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Anya Taylor-Joy plays Paul's sister Alia Atreides. She appeared briefly in a vision in Part Two, where Alia was still unborn. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune: Part Two)
  • Jason Momoa is back, but not quite as Duncan Idaho. His character poster names him as Hayt, the ghola regrown from Duncan's body. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Robert Pattinson joins as Scytale, the shape-shifting Tleilaxu Face Dancer. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
  • Isaach de Bankolé joins as Farok, a veteran of Paul's holy war in the novel. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune Messiah)
  • Charlotte Rampling, who played Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in the first two films, is in the official billing, though the sources here don't spell out her role. (Dune: Part Three official site)

Deadline reported in June 2025 that Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke had been cast as Paul and Chani's twins, Leto II and Ghanima. Legendary declined to comment at the time, and neither actor is in the official billing yet, so treat that as reported rather than confirmed. (Leto II and Ghanima casting report)

Who made it?#

Villeneuve directs from a screenplay by himself and Brian K. Vaughan. The producers are Mary Parent, Tanya Lapointe, Villeneuve, Cale Boyter and Joe Caracciolo Jr. Linus Sandgren takes over as cinematographer from Greig Fraser, while production designer Patrice Vermette, editor Joe Walker, costume designer Jacqueline West and composer Hans Zimmer all return. (Dune: Part Three official site; Dune: Part Three trailer launch)

At the March 2026 trailer launch, Villeneuve said he had planned to make a different film first, but the response to Part Two left him feeling he had to finish the story. He called Dune Messiah his favourite book in the series by far. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)

What is Dune: Part Three about?#

The official synopsis puts the film nearly two decades after Paul seized control of the Imperium. Paul is now a ruthless emperor facing the consequences of his reign, old allies return, new threats appear, and he is drawn into a conspiracy with Chani at the centre of it. (Dune: Part Three official site)

Villeneuve was more precise at the trailer launch: the film is set 17 years after Part Two. He described Paul as an emperor dealing with too much power and trying to break out of a cycle of violence, while people try to overthrow him, and said Paul and Chani's relationship is still the heart of the story. He also said the climate of Arrakis has changed in those years, and that the film visits new parts of Arrakis and new planets. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch)

The trailers show Paul and Chani choosing names for a child (Ghanima for a girl, Leto for a boy), Jessica telling Paul that his father never started a war, Irulan and Scytale discussing a change of regime, Alia covered in blood, the twins in their parents' arms, and Hayt telling Paul he is beyond redemption. What does Dune Messiah cover?#

This section has spoilers for the novel, not for the film. Dune Messiah picks up twelve years into Paul's reign. His Fremen legions have carried a holy war across the universe in his name, and by his own count it has killed sixty-one billion people. A conspiracy forms against him: Mohiam for the Bene Gesserit, the Guild Navigator Edric, Scytale for the Bene Tleilax, and Irulan. The Tleilaxu give Paul the ghola Hayt as a gift with a hidden purpose, and Chani is desperate for an heir while someone works to stop her having one. (Dune Messiah)

The book is short, tense and much darker than Dune. It is about a man who can see the future and still can't find a way out of the role his followers have built for him. For the full plot and the ending, see Dune Messiah explained, and for the twelve years the novel skips, see what happened between Dune and Dune Messiah. (Dune Messiah)

What hasn't been confirmed?#

Plenty. Nobody outside the production knows how closely the film follows the novel's ending, and the official synopsis is careful not to say. The book sets its story twelve years after Dune, the film 17 years after Part Two, so the timeline has already shifted. In the novel Alia is fifteen, and casting an adult actor suggests the film has aged her up, but how far is not stated. (Dune: Part Three official site; Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune Messiah)

Josh Brolin played Gurney Halleck in the first two films, but he isn't in the official billing, so his return isn't confirmed. Running times have been reported but not announced by the studio, and no further Dune film has been announced. Deadline reported that in January 2024 Villeneuve said Dune Messiah should be his last Dune film. (Dune: Part Three official site; Villeneuve on Dune Messiah as his last Dune film)
