How Dune: Part Two Sets Up Dune Messiah
Dune: Part Two ends differently from Frank Herbert's novel. Chani walks away, Alia is still unborn and the holy war starts on screen. Here is what the film changed, how it lines up with Dune Messiah, and what that might mean for Dune: Part Three.
Dune: Part Two finishes Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune, but it doesn't end where the book does. Its last scenes change three things that matter for the sequel: Chani leaves Paul, Alia hasn't been born, and the holy war begins in front of us. This page sets those changes against the novels, then looks at how Dune: Part Three, adapted from Dune Messiah, seems to be handling them. What the films show and what is guesswork are kept apart, and there are spoilers for both books. (Dune: Part Two; Dune; Dune Messiah)
Chani walks away#
At the end of Dune: Part Two, Chani refuses to kneel when Paul claims the throne and the hand of Princess Irulan. She walks out of the camp, calls a sandworm and rides off into the desert alone. Throughout the film she has been the one Fremen who never believed the prophecy, and the final shots are hers. (Dune: Part Two)
The novel ends the other way. Book Chani accepts that Irulan will be Paul's wife in name only, and the last lines have Lady Jessica telling her that history will call them both wives. In Dune Messiah she is still Paul's partner and lives with him in the palace, desperate for a child while Irulan secretly keeps her from conceiving. (Dune; Dune Messiah)
What Part Three shows: the trailers open with Paul and Chani together, choosing names for a child: Ghanima for a girl, Leto for a boy. The official synopsis mentions the reappearance of Paul's long-lost love and puts Chani at the heart of the conspiracy. Villeneuve has said their relationship is still the centre of the story. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune: Part Three official site)
Speculation: the phrase long-lost love suggests Chani has been gone for some of those 17 years and comes back, which would bridge the film's ending with the book's. Nothing released so far says how or when that happens. (Dune: Part Three official site; Dune: Part Two)
Alia is still unborn#
In Part Two, Jessica drinks the Water of Life while pregnant, waking her unborn daughter, who talks to her from the womb. Alia is still unborn at the end, and Paul sees her only once, as a grown woman in a vision. (Dune: Part Two)
In the novel Alia is born eight months after Duke Leto's death and is a small child by the final battle, where she kills Baron Harkonnen with a gom jabbar. In Dune Messiah she is fifteen, a priestess of her brother's religion, and drawn to the ghola Hayt. (Dune; Dune Messiah)
What Part Three shows: Anya Taylor-Joy, who played the vision of adult Alia in Part Two, now plays her in full. The trailers show Alia covered in blood. Taylor-Joy described her as carrying the wisdom of generations in her head and devoted to her brother above everything. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune: Part Three trailers and character posters)
Speculation: a 17-year gap means a film Alia born just after Part Two would be about seventeen, close to the book's fifteen. The film hasn't given her age. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune Messiah)
The holy war starts on screen#
Part Two ends with the war under way. When the Great Houses in orbit refuse to accept Paul as Emperor, he sends the Fremen against them, and Stilgar and the southern believers set off to carry it across the stars. The film presents this as Paul's choice. (Dune: Part Two)
In Herbert's Dune, Paul sees the jihad coming for most of the book and searches for a way to stop it, until he understands that it will happen even if he dies. The book closes with him on the throne and the war still ahead. The fighting itself happens between the novels. Dune Messiah only looks back on it, through Paul's own count of the dead, and through veterans like Otheym and Farok. (Dune; Dune Messiah)
What Part Three shows: in the July 2026 trailer, Jason Momoa's character tells Paul that he has conquered the galaxy and destroyed thousands of worlds, and that he is beyond redemption. Paul says in voice-over that the more he fights, the more enemies fight back. (Dune: Part Three trailers and character posters; Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
For the jihad as the novels describe it, see what happened in the twelve years between Dune and Dune Messiah. (Dune Messiah)
Smaller changes that carry over#
Part Two drops Paul and Chani's first son, a boy named Leto whom the novel has killed in a Sardaukar raid. In the film the name Leto is fresh, and the Part Three trailer has Chani pick it so the child would have his grandfather's wisdom. (Dune; Dune: Part Two; Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
The film also leaves out Thufir Hawat and Count Fenring at the climax. Neither is needed for Messiah. Duncan Idaho died in both versions of Dune, and both sequels bring him back as the Tleilaxu ghola Hayt. Momoa's character poster names him Hayt. (Dune; Dune: Part Two; Dune Messiah; Dune: Part Three trailer launch)
Irulan's role grows. Part Two introduces her keeping a journal, which nods to the book's habit of opening chapters with her writings. In Dune Messiah she joins the conspiracy against Paul, and the Part Three trailer shows her talking with Scytale about overthrowing him. (Dune: Part Two; Dune Messiah; Dune: Part Three trailers and character posters)
What it means for Part Three#
What is confirmed: the film is set 17 years after Part Two, Paul is an emperor whose war has spread, people are plotting to overthrow him, Hayt, Scytale, Farok and an adult Alia are in it, and Paul and Chani's twins appear in the trailers. (Dune: Part Three trailer launch; Dune: Part Three official site; Dune: Part Three trailers and character posters)
What isn't: whether Chani's story ends the way it does in the book, how far the film follows the conspiracy, and whether Paul's ending matches Herbert's. Villeneuve has said Dune Messiah is his favourite of the novels and that Paul is trying to find a way out of the cycle of violence, which fits the book. Beyond that, anything you read about the ending is a guess. For the book's version, see Dune Messiah explained, and for who's who, see the Dune Messiah characters. Frequently asked questions
- Does Chani leave Paul in the Dune books?
- No. In the novel Dune she stays with Paul as his true partner while he marries Irulan for the throne, and in Dune Messiah she is still with him twelve years later. Walking away at the end of Dune: Part Two is a change made for the film.
- Why is Alia not born in Dune: Part Two?
- The film squeezes the novel's two years into a much shorter span, so Jessica is still pregnant at the end. In the book Alia is born eight months after Duke Leto's death and is a small child at the final battle.
- Does the jihad start at the end of Dune: Part Two?
- Yes. When the Great Houses refuse to accept Paul, he sends the Fremen to war against them. In the novel Paul foresees the jihad, but the war itself happens between the books and is only looked back on in Dune Messiah.
- How many years after Dune: Part Two is Dune: Part Three set?
- Villeneuve said at the trailer launch that it is set 17 years later. Dune Messiah takes place twelve years after the end of Dune.
- Will Chani and Paul get back together in Dune: Part Three?
- The film hasn't said. The trailers show the two of them together choosing names for a child, and the official synopsis mentions the reappearance of Paul's long-lost love, but how they reconcile is not known.
