Chani, known by her intimate name Sihaya, meaning desert spring, was a Fremen warrior and Sayyadina and the royal concubine of Emperor Paul Muad'Dib Atreides. The daughter of the planetologist Liet-Kynes, she was Paul's only lover, and she mothered his three children: a firstborn son, the Empress Ghanima Atreides, and the God Emperor Leto Atreides II. She died at Sietch Tabr giving birth to the twins.

Origins among the Fremen#

Chani was born on Arrakis, the daughter of the half-Fremen planetologist Liet-Kynes and the Fremen herbalist Faroula. By the time of her father's death she was already a formidable fighter, serving under her uncle and Naib, Stilgar, at his primary residence of Sietch Tabr.

Life with Muad'Dib#

After Arrakis was invaded by Harkonnen and Sardaukar forces, Paul and his mother Jessica escaped into the deep desert, where they were intended to be left for dead. Sheltering in a rock formation from a sandworm, they were intercepted by a band of Fremen travellers, including Chani, whom her father had sent to find the Atreides refugees. Their meeting came during a tense stand-off provoked by Jamis and by Stilgar, who was subdued and impressed by Jessica's combat skill. Though Chani was already familiar to Paul from his prescient dreams on Caladan, she saw only a stranger.

Once Paul and Jessica were assimilated into Fremen society under Stilgar's guidance, Chani began her lasting love affair with the young Duke, now known as Usul and Muad'Dib. She bore him a son named for Paul's late father, but the child shared his namesake's fate, killed by a Sardaukar raiding party while his parents and grandmother were visiting another sietch. The grief drove Paul to take the Water of Life and fall into a long coma, from which only Chani's familiarity with the transmutation process could revive him. After the Fremen victory over Houses Harkonnen and Corrino and Paul's ascension to the Golden Lion Throne through his marriage to Shaddam IV's eldest daughter, Chani became his official concubine but remained his only lover, reassured by Jessica that history would remember her as wife.

Pregnancy and death#

Living in the great Arrakeen palace, Chani suffered years of fertility troubles after Princess Irulan laced her meals with contraceptives, intending to become the sole bearer of Paul's children and secure the Corrino bloodline, a scheme sanctioned by the Bene Gesserit out of fear over Chani's undocumented ancestry. The sabotage failed against Chani's decision to take heavy doses of melange to overcome her infertility. The pregnancy that followed was traumatic and accelerated, leaving her constantly famished and addicted, and she went into labour at Sietch Tabr to give birth to the pre-born twins Paul named Ghanima and Leto II. Irulan's treachery proved unintentionally fatal: Chani succumbed to the spice overdose and the trauma of childbirth.

At the height of their own conspiracy against the Emperor, the Tleilaxu agents Bijaz and Scytale offered to resurrect Chani with their axlotl tanks and mnemonic conditioning, as they claimed to have revived Duncan Idaho. Despite his grief, Paul refused, knowing the cost of such bargains, and had them killed. Chani's remains were eventually interred in the great crypt beneath her son's desert Citadel.

Description#

Chani was slight, with an elfin face and the dark, whiteless blue eyes of her fellow Fremen. She had long, tawny-red hair, a trait her daughter Ghanima would share.
