the Emperor's Truthsayer
Gaius Helen Mohiam is the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother who taught Lady Jessica, serves as Truthsayer to Emperor Shaddam IV and tests the young Paul Atreides with the gom jabbar. In Dune Messiah she joins the conspiracy against Paul and is executed for it.
Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother and the Truthsayer of Emperor Shaddam IV. She had taught Lady Jessica at the Sisterhood's school, she opens Dune by testing Paul Atreides with the gom jabbar, and in Dune Messiah she joins the plot to bring him down. (Dune; Dune Messiah)
Truthsayer and teacher#
Mohiam had been Jessica's teacher at the Bene Gesserit school. By the time Dune opens, she serves Shaddam IV as his Truthsayer, the Reverend Mother whose job is to tell the Emperor when someone is lying. To Paul she looks like an old crone, with hair like matted spiderwebs. (Dune)
She is also there for the Sisterhood's breeding plans. Jessica had been told to give Duke Leto a daughter and chose to bear him a son, and Mohiam doesn't hide her anger about it. (Dune)
The test of the gom jabbar#
Before the Atreides leave Caladan for Arrakis, Mohiam tests Paul. She has him put his hand in a box that causes pain by nerve induction, while she holds the gom jabbar, a needle tipped with poison, at his neck. If he pulls his hand out, he dies. The test is meant to show whether he is human in the Bene Gesserit sense: able to master the animal urge to escape pain. (Dune)
Paul keeps his hand in the box. Afterwards Mohiam tells Jessica that no girl had ever been made to bear so much. She asks Paul about his dreams, and she is clearly weighing whether this son Jessica wasn't supposed to have might be the Kwisatz Haderach the Sisterhood has been breeding towards. (Dune)
Arrakis#
Mohiam comes to Arrakis with the Emperor for the final battle and is in the room when Paul confronts Shaddam after the Battle of Arrakeen. The boy she once tested is now the one dictating terms, and he is the Kwisatz Haderach the Bene Gesserit wanted, born outside their control and beyond their reach. (Dune)
Conspiracy and execution#
Twelve years into Paul's reign, Mohiam plots against him with the Tleilaxu Face Dancer Scytale and the Guild Navigator Edric, and she brings Princess Irulan, Paul's wife in name only, into the plot. Their gift to Paul is Hayt, the ghola of Duncan Idaho. The Sisterhood still wants the Atreides bloodline back under its control. (Dune Messiah)
Paul summons her, and she expects to be killed. Instead he offers a bargain: a child of his by artificial insemination for the Sisterhood, in return for the safety of Chani and her child. Mohiam sees the problems at once, from the taboos left over from the Butlerian Jihad to the fact that such a child could never take the throne, and says she must consult the Sisterhood. The plot fails. After Paul walks into the desert, Alia orders the traitors executed, and Stilgar carries it out. He tells Duncan Idaho that the dead include the Reverend Mother Mohiam, the Guildsman and the priest Korba. Paul had left word that she should not be killed. Stilgar disobeyed, as Alia knew he would. The novels give no year for her death. (Dune Messiah)

Lady Jessica: the concubine who bore a son

Edric was a third-stage Spacing Guild Navigator and ambassador who joined the failed conspiracy to assassinate Emperor Paul-Muad'Dib. His prescience shielded the plot from the Emperor's foresight, and he delivered the Hayt ghola to Arrakis before the scheme collapsed and he was executed.
