Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (died 10210 A.G.) was a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother who served as Truthsayer to Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. She trained Lady Jessica, administered the test of the gom jabbar to the young Paul Atreides, and at the close of her life joined the conspiracy that sought to topple the Atreides Empire.
Truthsayer and teacher#
Mohiam trained the Lady Jessica in the Bene Gesserit chapterhouse on Wallach IX. Two decades later she had risen to serve as Truthsayer to Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, the office charged with detecting falsehood in those who spoke before the throne. In that role she held a position of great influence at the heart of the Imperium, close to the Emperor and to the workings of the Sisterhood's long breeding program.
The test of the gom jabbar#
Before Paul Atreides departed for Arrakis, Mohiam tested him with the gom jabbar, a poisoned needle held at his neck while his hand was placed inside a small box that produced pain through nerve induction. The trial was meant to discover whether Paul was truly human, able to override animal instinct and hold his hand within the box despite agony rather than snatch it away to certain death. The test drained an immense amount of energy from the Reverend Mother, for no male or female child had ever before withstood that much physical pain.
Arrakis and the Kwisatz Haderach#
Two years later Mohiam travelled to Arrakis with the Emperor in the last year of the war on the planet, the conflict in which Paul had become the religious leader the Fremen called Muad'Dib. After the Battle of Arrakeen she was present at the final confrontation. There she acknowledged to Jessica that Paul was the Kwisatz Haderach, the long-sought end of the Sisterhood's breeding program. The recognition brought her no comfort: she was at once angry at him and terrified of him, for the Bene Gesserit had not produced him on their schedule or under their control.
Conspiracy and execution#
After Paul ascended the Golden Lion Throne and his Jihad swept across the Empire, Mohiam joined the conspiracy to topple his rule. With Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer, the Guild Navigator Edric, and Irulan Corrino, Paul's embittered wife, she plotted to use her standing to insinuate the Tleilaxu ghola Hayt into the court, hoping to weaken Paul's confidence in his prescience and so ruin him.
The plot failed. After Paul walked into the desert following the death of Chani, Alia initiated a retaliation against the conspirators, and Mohiam was executed in it, despite Paul's instruction that she be spared.
She was a heavyset woman with hair like matted spiderwebs, a leathery face with sunken cheeks and an overlong nose, deeply pocketed eyes, and pale gums set with silvery metal teeth.
