Genetic memory: the ancestral record hidden in the flesh

Genetic memory was the phenomenon by which an individual could possess the memories of their ancestors, hidden away within their own genetic code. Under ordinary circumstances that inheritance remained sealed, but exposure to awareness spectrum narcotics such as the spice melange could cause it to surface, laying open lifetimes of experience that would otherwise have been lost to history. The Bene Gesserit built their sisterhood of Reverend Mothers upon it, calling their share of the inheritance Other Memory, and their breeding program pursued a male who could reach the whole of it, the Kwisatz Haderach. The same principle produced the pre-born children of House Atreides, made possible the restoration of ghola memories by the Bene Tleilax, and carried within it the peril the Sisterhood named Abomination.

The imprint within the cells#

The principle behind genetic memory held that an individual's experiences became imprinted upon their cells, and were in turn carried, hidden, within the cells of their descendants. Each generation thus bore a silent archive of every life that had preceded it along its bloodline. The same theory was invoked to explain the mystery of benevolent mutation, the appearance of favorable traits that seemed to arrive from nowhere.

For almost every human being the archive stayed closed. An individual's genetic memory was not normally available to them, and most lived and died without any awareness of the multitude recorded in their flesh. What opened the archive was chemistry. Exposure to awareness spectrum narcotics, above all the spice melange of Arrakis, could cause an individual's genetic memory to surface, and the disciplined exploitation of that fact shaped several of the great powers of the Imperium.

Other Memory and the Reverend Mothers#

The most systematic users of genetic memory were the Bene Gesserit. A Sister who successfully changed the Water of Life within her own body and survived the ordeal emerged as a Reverend Mother, and with that title came access to her genetic memories, though on the female side only. The Sisterhood called this inheritance Other Memory and treated it as a source of immense knowledge that would otherwise have been lost to history, a living library reaching back through every mother of every mother.

The limitation was absolute and deeply feared. As the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam explained to the young Paul Atreides, the spice allowed a Reverend Mother to reach genetic memory, but only that of her female ancestors. The masculine side of her ancestry represented a place in her consciousness that repelled and terrorized her, a direction in which no Sister could look. Nor was the phenomenon confined to the Sisterhood itself. Women outside the order who took the Water of Life and survived, such as the Reverend Mothers of the Fremen, were likewise exposed to the ego-memories of their ancestresses.

The Kwisatz Haderach#

The female barrier defined the central ambition of the Bene Gesserit breeding program. Over many generations the Sisterhood worked toward a male who could possess the genetic memories of both his female and his male ancestors, and who could look into the place where the Reverend Mothers could not. Such an individual would be called the Kwisatz Haderach.

Paul Atreides was the first Kwisatz Haderach produced from that program. When he changed the Water of Life he gained access to the memories of both his female and his male ancestors, though where a Reverend Mother completed the conversion in the span of her ordeal, the process took Paul more than three weeks. His son went further still. As God Emperor, Leto Atreides II drew upon the total genetic memory of the human species, joining it to Bene Gesserit encyclopedic knowledge and prescient awareness in the design of the Golden Path by which he guided all known humanity.

The pre-born#

Genetic memory could also open before birth. When a pregnant woman underwent the changing of the Water of Life, the transformation woke the child in her womb as well, and such children, called pre-born, inherited the awareness and memories of their ancestors before they ever drew breath. Alia Atreides became pre-born in exactly this way, roused to full ancestral consciousness as a fetus when her mother the Lady Jessica converted the Water of Life among the Fremen and became a Reverend Mother.

The pre-born differed from Reverend Mothers in one crucial respect. Female pre-born such as Alia and her niece Ghanima Atreides had access to the memories of both male and female ancestors, an inheritance no Sister could match. Alia carried a continual inner relationship with the ego-memory of her maternal grandfather, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, while Ghanima could recall the test of the gom jabbar administered to her father by Gaius Helen Mohiam as if she had endured it herself. Ghanima's twin Leto II was likewise pre-born with access to both lines, and the twins would even play games together in which they allowed the ego-memories of their grandparents, Duke Leto Atreides and the Lady Jessica, to surface and interact with each other.

Abomination#

The inheritance carried a mortal danger. The consciousness of an individual preserved within genetic memory was termed an ego-memory, and an ego-memory could do more than advise. A Reverend Mother might be overpowered by one of her ancestors, her personality supplanted until she was possessed outright, a condition the Bene Gesserit named Abomination. The Sisterhood theorized that only its own training and mental discipline could hold the inner multitude at bay, and the pre-born, whose undeveloped psyches met the flood of ancestral personality before birth, were judged the most susceptible of all. Bene Gesserit general policy was unambiguous: anyone found to be Abomination was to be killed, regardless of how benevolent or powerful the possessing ego-memory was considered to be.

Alia Atreides became the proof of the doctrine. Too young to control the dynamic personalities that had invaded her awareness, she struggled through her adult life against the voices of the inner multitude. To quiet them she struck a bargain with the ego-memory of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, granting him a share of her consciousness in exchange for suppressing the others, and the Baron, true to his devious nature, took more than was bargained. Possessed, and ruling as Regent of the Atreides Empire through an autocratic cult of personality, Alia ended her possession in the only way left to her. She threw herself from a high window, and her death extinguished the ego-memories of all those within her, the Baron among them.

The gholas of the Bene Tleilax#

The Bene Tleilax approached genetic memory from the opposite direction. Their gholas, grown from the cells of the dead, at first remembered nothing of their original lives, yet the Tleilaxu had long theorized that those memories could be reawakened. The theory rested on the concept of genetic memory itself, together with gathered evidence that gholas experienced "echoes" of their former existence, feelings stirred up by sounds or smells.

To test it, the Tleilaxu presented Muad'Dib with a ghola of Duncan Idaho, grown without his original memories and given the name Hayt. Hayt had been conditioned by his makers to assassinate Muad'Dib, but Idaho's innate love for the Atreides could not be reconciled with that compulsion, and the psychological trauma born of the paradox broke the seal on his buried past. Thereafter the Tleilaxu used deliberate psychological trauma to restore a ghola's memories up to and including the moment of the original's death. Leto II, who had a long series of Duncan Idaho gholas created to serve him across the millennia of his reign, would greet each new Idaho at his Keep with the voices and ego-memories of the long dead Duke Leto and of Paul, easing the ghola's adjustment to the new order. The last ghola of Duncan Idaho and Siona Atreides were also counted among the few outside the Bene Gesserit ever to hold Other Memory.
