Truthsayer
detector of lies
A Truthsayer was a person able to detect truth as it was spoken, the talent itself called truthsense. The skill was cultivated chiefly by the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, and Truthsayers were often retained by the Padishah Emperor to sit in judgment over the testimony of others.
A Truthsayer was a person who could detect truth as it was being told, the ability itself being known as truthsense. Truthsaying was a skill developed and used by the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, and during the era of the Faufreluches the majority of those employed as Truthsayers were Bene Gesserit adepts. Because of this association, several factions of the Imperium regarded the talent as invaluable for gaining political power and prestige, and Truthsayers were often retained on behalf of the Padishah Emperor to weigh the words of those who came before him.
Truthsense and the Sisterhood#
Truthsaying was a discipline developed within the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, and the talent and its association with the order were tightly linked in the minds of the great factions. During the time of the Faufreluches, the strict caste order of the Imperium, the majority of Truthsayers in active service were Bene Gesserit adepts. Several houses and powers viewed access to a Truthsayer as a means of securing political advantage and prestige, since a sitting Truthsayer could expose deception in negotiation and at court.
Truthsayers in imperial service#
Truthsayers were often employed on behalf of the Padishah Emperor, who used them to judge the honesty of those who testified before the throne. The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam served in this capacity as Truthsayer to Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV.
The inborn gift#
The ability to see truth was also held to be a gift that certain individuals were born with rather than trained into. When Gaius Helen Mohiam first met Paul Atreides on Caladan in 10191 AG, she identified him as one such naturally gifted individual. Other figures associated with the talent across the generations included Tertius Eileen Anteac, Marcus Claire Luyseyal, Sholem, Dortujla, and Duncan Idaho.
