Dune: Prophecy Explained: Season 1 Plot Summary and Ending
The full story of HBO's Bene Gesserit series Dune: Prophecy, episode by episode, from Raquella's death to the escape to Arrakis. With the ending explained: who Desmond Hart really is, what Valya saw inside him, and where season one leaves the Sisterhood.
Dune: Prophecy is HBO's six-part series about the early years of the Bene Gesserit, first shown between November and December 2024. It is set about 10,000 years before Paul Atreides and draws on, but is set after, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Great Schools of Dune novels, which start with Sisterhood of Dune. Much of the story is new. Emily Watson plays Valya Harkonnen and Olivia Williams plays her sister Tula. This page covers every episode of season one and the ending, so it contains full spoilers. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Before the story begins#
Humanity had beaten the thinking machines in the Butlerian Jihad, and computers were now the highest crime in the empire. The Sisterhood, an order of women trained in total control of mind and body, placed its Truthsayers at the side of the Great Houses and the Emperor. It also kept a secret: a breeding record of the noble bloodlines, and the forbidden machine that held it. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024; Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 3, 2024)
House Harkonnen was in disgrace. The family blamed Vorian Atreides, and that grudge drives everything Valya does. The show's flashbacks fill in the rest as it goes. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 3, 2024)
Valya's rise and the reckoning#
The series opens with the death of Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul. On her deathbed she had a vision of a coming reckoning. Her granddaughter and chosen successor, Dorotea, wanted to end the Sisterhood's secret breeding work. Valya used the Voice to order Dorotea to kill herself, and she did. Valya took the order for herself. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Thirty years later Valya was Mother Superior and Tula ran the school on Wallach IX, training acolytes as Truthsayers. On Salusa Secundus, the Sisterhood had brokered a betrothal between Princess Ynez Corrino and Pruwet, the nine-year-old heir of House Richese. Emperor Javicco Corrino had doubts about the match. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Into this came Desmond Hart, a soldier back from Arrakis who said he had been swallowed by a sandworm and lived. His presence filled the Emperor's Truthsayer, Kasha Jinjo, with visions. At a palace dinner Pruwet burst into flames from the inside. Kasha, back on Wallach IX, died the same way at the same moment. Valya remembered Raquella's warning. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 1, 2024)
Desmond at court#
Kasha's autopsy found nothing. Valya came to Salusa to protect Ynez, and Desmond, arrested, told the court that Shai-Hulud had given him his power. Empress Natalya persuaded her husband that such a man was more use alive. Under questioning by Valya, Desmond admitted both killings, and Javicco still refused to put him on trial. When Duke Ferdinand Richese threatened the throne over his son's death, Desmond turned his power on him too. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 2, 2024)
Meanwhile the princess's sword master, Keiran Atreides, was secretly scanning the palace for rebels, and the Emperor's illegitimate son Constantine was looking for ways to matter. Valya's spy Mikaela got her a list of the rebels, and Valya held on to it, ready to use against the throne. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 2, 2024)
On Wallach IX, the Sisters needed to understand Raquella's vision. Tula, acting for Valya, asked the young acolyte Lila, Raquella's descendant, to go through the Agony so she could reach her ancestors in Other Memory. In the trance Lila heard of a coming "revenant". Then Dorotea, Lila's grandmother, seized her and showed her Valya forcing Dorotea's death. Lila collapsed and seemed to die. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 2, 2024)
The Harkonnen sisters' past#
The third episode goes back to the sisters' youth. Their brother Griffin had tried to restore the family's place in the Landsraad and died, the Harkonnens believed, at Vorian Atreides' hands. Valya joined the Sisterhood with revenge on her mind. Tula, meanwhile, had fallen for Orry Atreides on Caladan. Orry proposed and she accepted. After they spent the night together, she killed him and his family to avenge Griffin. This was the start of the Atreides-Harkonnen feud as the show tells it. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 3, 2024)
Raquella saw that Valya's loyalty was to her House, not the order, and sent her home to Lankiveil to come back as a Reverend Mother or not at all. Valya used the Voice on her own mother, survived the Agony alone and returned. In the present, Valya visited her family, and Tula pretended to let the comatose Lila die while secretly keeping her alive by connecting her to the Sisterhood's hidden thinking machine. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 3, 2024)
Twice born#
Valya made her nephew Harrow Harkonnen her way back into power. Sisters spread word of Pruwet's murder through the Great Houses, and Harrow was invited onto the High Council with Valya as his Truthsayer. When the Houses moved against Desmond, he confessed to Pruwet's death but called it a lawful execution, then exposed a rebel plot to kill the Emperor with an Ixian bomb. Javicco let him burn the plotters in front of the council. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 4, 2024)
Valya's uncle Evgeny blamed her for the family's ruin. When he struggled to breathe during their last argument, she held his treatment out of reach until he died. On Wallach IX, shared nightmares of sandworms and blue eyes swept the acolytes, the zealot Emeline nearly killed herself before the acolyte Jen stopped her, and Lila woke. The acolyte Theodosia turned out to be a shapeshifter, and at Valya's wish took Griffin's face. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 4, 2024)
The net closes#
Javicco made Desmond Bashar of a new regiment. Valya brought in Sister Francesca, Javicco's former lover and Constantine's mother, to win back the Emperor. Speaking through Lila, Raquella praised Valya. Jen, trusted because she resisted the nightmares, was shown the ailing Lila, and Lila isolated the virus that had killed Kasha. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 5, 2024)
Desmond's soldiers found smuggled spice at the club where Mikaela worked, and she and Keiran fought their way out. Constantine then handed Keiran's palace scans to Desmond, Keiran was arrested, and Constantine was rewarded with command of the fleet being sent to pacify Arrakis. From Desmond's blood, Tula learned he carried both Atreides and Harkonnen blood. Desmond told Natalya his mother had been a Sister who left him to live on scraps, and the two kissed. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 5, 2024)
The ending explained#
The finale's flashbacks reveal the secret behind everything. Tula had become pregnant by Orry before she killed him. She swapped her newborn son for a stillborn baby and sent him away. That child was Desmond. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024)
In the present it all came apart. Natalya had Ynez arrested for trying to free Keiran. Valya gave Francesca a poison needle, a gom jabbar, to kill Javicco. Javicco begged Valya for help against Desmond, and she told him the Sisterhood had shaped his whole life, so he arrested her. On Wallach IX, Lila, now speaking as Dorotea, showed the acolytes the bones of Dorotea's followers, whom Valya had made to die, and smashed Anirul. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024)
Francesca showed Javicco the needle and blamed Valya. Javicco, broken by a lifetime of being used, stabbed himself. Natalya then killed Francesca with the needle and took power, with Desmond at her side. Valya freed Ynez and Keiran and got them off the planet, while Theodosia took the princess's shape to cover the escape and stabbed Desmond, who lived. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024)
Valya stayed behind to face Desmond. He set off the virus in her, and it nearly killed her until Tula taught her to stop fighting the fear and let it pass through her. Inside him Valya saw what had been done: someone she could not name had put thinking machine technology into Desmond and made him a weapon. She meant to kill him, but Tula told her he was her son. Tula held him, and Desmond had her arrested. Valya, Ynez and Keiran reached Arrakis, with Valya set on finding the hidden hand behind Desmond. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024)
So the ending turns the season around. The Sisterhood thought its threat was a Harkonnen-Atreides grudge and a hostile court, and Desmond was both: the child of the feud the sisters started. But Valya's vision shows a hidden hand behind him, using machines in an empire that outlawed them. Desmond's virus feeds on fear, and the way to beat it is to let fear pass, the same lesson the Bene Gesserit later write into the Litany Against Fear. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024; Dune)
It leaves plenty open. Who made Desmond, and what Raquella's reckoning really was. What Natalya does with the throne, with Tula her prisoner and Constantine's fleet heading for Arrakis. And whether Lila, owned by Dorotea, now leads a Sisterhood that knows what Valya did. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024)
Where it fits#
Dune: Prophecy sits long before the novels, near the start of the Dune timeline. The order it shows is still forming: it has the Voice, Truthsayers and the Agony, but not yet the full set of skills described in Bene Gesserit powers explained, or the breeding plan that ends with Paul Atreides. For how that plan plays out ten thousand years later, see Dune ending explained. (Dune: Prophecy, season 1 episode 6, 2024; Dune)
